    Prime Minister Modi launches book titled "Getting India Back on Track"

    On 8th June 2014, The book titled "Getting India Back on track  - An Action Agenda for Reform" was released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The book edited by Bibek Debroy, Ashley Tellis and Reece Trevor was published by Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. 

    The book contains insightful essays by eminent academicians and public policy experts and the foreword has been written by Ratan Tata. It says how Indian policymakers can return the country to a path of high and sustained economic growth.

    The book has explored challenges and opportunities faced by India mainly in every major sector of the Indian economy. In fact it has brought a clear blueprint for India’s future in form of concise memoranda for next generation leaders and general public.

    Sourav Ganguly included in Mudgal Committee on IPL spot-fixing

     On 8th June 2014, the former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly joined the Mudgal Committee on IPL spot-fixing as an expert on cricketing affairs. The Mudgal committee headed by Justice (retired) Mukul Mudgal is probing IPL betting and spot fixing scandals of 2013. It is investigating on the 13 names submitted by it to Supreme Court in a sealed envelope in February 2014 after a preliminary inquiry. It was appointed in October 2013 by the Supreme Court to investigate the fixing allegations that took place during the IPL's 2013 season.

     

    UN General Assembly announced an award in honour of Nelson Mandela

     On 7th June 2014, UN General Assembly announced an award in honour of Nelson Mandela. The award was announced to pay tribute to the achievements and contribution of anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela.

    N Chandrababu Naidu Sworn in as Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister

     On 8th June 2014, the chief of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) N Chandrababu Naidu took oath as the first Chief Minister of the new Andhra Pradesh. New Andhra Pradesh means the state formed after its bifurcation for the creation of Telangana. Governor ESL Narasimhan administered the oath of office and secrecy. 19 cabinet ministers, including three women, were sworn in alongwith Mr Naidu.

     

     

     

    Petro Poroshenko sworn in as Ukraine president

    On 7th June 2014, Petro Poroshenko was sworn-in as the President of Ukraine in Kiev. He was elected as President on 25 May 2014 with more than 54 percent of the vote.

    Poroshenko is the owner of the Roshen chocolates group. He created Solidarity political party in 2001 and it was renamed as All-Ukrainian Union Solidarity.

    Kudankulam became India's first nuclear plant to generate 1000 MW power

    On 8th June 2014, Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant became India's first nuclear plant to generate 1000 MW power, which is among important national current affairs. The Unit 1 of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant (KNPP) has reached full capacity generation of 1,000MW. 

    With this, the total nuclear energy contribution will increase to 5789 MW. Work on the Unit-first of Kudankulam Plant was completed in 2013. Before Kudankulam, Tata Mundra project in Gujarat had the distinction of being the largest single generation unit in operation with 800 MW power capacity.

    Rafael Nadal Wins Record 9th French Open Title

     On 8th June 2014, Rafael Nadal of Spain won the French Open title 2014 for the ninth time, thus he also became first man to win five French Open titles in a row, which is important news in Sports Current Affairs. He defeated Novak Djokovic of Yugoslavia with 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, and 6-4 in the final. 

    Also Maria Sharapova of Russia won the title against Simona Halep of Romania in the final of the French Open women's singles.

     

    Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi visited India

    Foreign Minister of China Wang Yi was on a two-day long visit to India from 8 June to 9 June 2014. He visited India in the capacity of Special Envoy of the President of China, Xi Jinping. The objective of the visit was to establish contact with the new Government of India led by Narendra Modi.

    It is first high-level interaction with the newly formed government. Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi on Sunday held talks with his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj and discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in key areas including trade and investment.

    Abdel Fattah al-Sisi sworn in as Egypt's president

    Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi Sworn In as Egypt's New President. 

    In an inauguration ceremony with low-key attendance by Western allies concerned by a crackdown on dissent, the former army chief called for hard work and the development of freedom "in a responsible framework away from chaos".

    Last month's election, which officials said Sisi won with 97 percent of the vote, followed three years of upheaval since a popular uprising ended 30 years of rule by former air force commander Hosni Mubarak.
