    Indian Air Force Mountaineering Expedition Team Explored Unclimbed Peak in Arunachal Pradesh

    Indian Air Force (IAF) mountaineering expedition team explored an unclimbed peak of Mt Gorichen (5587 meters) in Arunachal Pradesh. The team was led by Wing Commander D Panda. This was the first expedition of IAF into this region of Eastern Himalayas, which is important news among current affairs.

    The peak lies on the west of Mt Gorichen and was christened as Mt Garud Parvat by air warriors who climbed it for the first time in history. The expedition was flagged off from Delhi on 24 Apr 2014 and included both experienced and newly trained mountaineers. After extensive exploration and reconnaissance, the team summitted an unclimbed peak of height 5887M in two groups on 14 & 15 May. 

    This was the very first instance that IAF has ventured into this region of Eastern Himalayas. Unpredictable weather coupled with Western Disturbances increased the difficulties already faced by the team. In spite of all these hindrances, the team courageously persisted with the task & succeeded in their endeavor. This peak lies on the west of Mt Gorichen and has been christened as Mt Garud Parvat by the air warriors who climbed it for the first time in history. 

    Union Rural Development Minister Gopitnath Munde passed away

     On 3rd June 2014, Union Rural Development Minister, Gopinath Munde died in a road accident in Delhi. Munde was sworn-in as the Cabinet Minister for Panchayati Raj, Drinking Water and Sanitation and Rural Development on 26th May 2014. He was 64 Years Old.

    He was born in Parali of Beed district on 12 December 1949. He was a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for five terms from 1980 to 1985 and then from 1990 to 2009.    

    He was the Leader of the Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 1992 to 1995 and held the post of Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1995 to 1999.

    He won the Lok Sabha election from Beed constituency for the first time in 2009 and served as Deputy Leader of Opposition in 15th Lok Sabha (2009-2014).

    Ms Kavery Banerjee Appointed as Secretary, Department of Posts

    On 31st May 2014, The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the appointment of Kavery Banerjee as Secretary, Department of Posts. 

    Besides this, Banerjee, an IPoS (Indian Postal Service) of 1978 batch, was also appointed as Chairperson of Postal Services Board and Director General of Postal Services. Before this appointment, Banerjee was serving Postal Services Board as Member (Technology).

    Garuda V bilateral air exercise started by Indian and French Air Force at Jodhpur Air Base

    As per Ministry of Defence print release on 2nd June 2014, the Indian Air Force & French Air Force commenced the bilateral exercise "Ex Garuda V" at Jodhpur Air Base. 

    This is with the aim of enhancing Operational Co-operation and to validate capabilities, which is important news among national current affairs.

    During this fortnight long exercise both the Air Forces would engage in Operations based on their Operational Philosophy and methodology of operations practicing various challenging air situation scenarios. The Exercise would help both Air Forces in appreciating the intricacies of planning and conduct of combat missions in an Operational Environment. 

    Frontline fighter aircraft of the IAF including the SU 30, Mig-27 (UPG), Mig 21 Bison and force multipliers such as the AWACS and Flight Refueller Aircraft IL 78 would be participating from the Indian Air Force while the French AF has fielded their frontline Rafale Fighter aircraft along with their KC 135 Refueller. 

    The Fifth Indo-French bilateral Air Exercise "Garuda-V" is scheduled from 2nd June to 13th June, 2014 at Air Force Station Jodhpur. The previous edition of the exercise was held at Istres, France during 2010. The exercise will involve the assets of IAF's main operational formations including the Gandhinagar based South Western Air Command and Allahabad based Central Air Command. 

    UP CM Akhilesh Yadav ordered setting up of women's helpline in each district of State

     Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has ordered the setting up of women's helpline in all districts of the state. SSPs/SPs are directed to monitor helplines. Women facing harassment or any other form of violence can approach this helpline and a probe would be conducted by the women's cell of the police. All such probes will also be monitored by district police chiefs.

    Chief Minister said that incidents such as rape were inhuman and serious criminal offences and pointed out that such cases should be pursued through fast track courts and justice expedited.

    In his order, the Chief Minister also ordered the District Magistrates and Senior Police Officers to impose stringent National Security Act on those who threatened a rape-victim or her family. Strict actions will be taken in case the officials fail to attend the acts of crime swiftly. 

    RGCA's Lab is India's First NABL Accredited Aquaculture Pathology Lab

    The Central Aquaculture Pathology Laboratory of Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture (RGCA), Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), became the first aquaculture pathology laboratory in the country to be accredited by NABL (National Accreditation Board For Testing & Calibration Laboratories) on 30th May, 2014. 

    Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture, the Research & Development arm of MPEDA established a state-of-the-art Central Aquaculture Pathology Laboratory at its headquarters in Sirkali, TamilNadu in September 2011. The laboratory has been serving aquaculture industry of the country by providing timely and reliable diagnosis of various diseases encountered during the culture of finfish, shrimps and freshwater prawns. 

    The laboratory is equipped with all the latest disease diagnostic tools and has three component units for Molecular Pathology, Histopathology and Microbiology which together helps in diagnosis of various diseases encountered by the aquaculture industry. The Molecular Pathology Laboratory has been routinely engaged in screening/diagnosis of 16 Crustacean (shrimp/crab) pathogens including World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) listed pathogens besides 3 finfish pathogens.
