On 8th September 2014, Important news among sports current affairs is that, Croatia's Marin Cilic won his first Grand Slam title by winning US Open title. He defeated 10th seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York by 6-3 , 6-3, 6-3.
Electrolux set to aquire GE Appliances for 3.3 billion US dollars
Electrolux set to aquire GE Appliances for 3.3 billion US dollars as a deal was signed on 8th September 2014. By this Electrolux will be able to compete effectively with Whirlpool in US. Though Electrolux said it would continue to use the GE Appliances brand.
Indian scientist and ecologist Kamal Bawa won MIDORI Prize in Biodiversity 2014
On 8th September 2014, Indian Scientist Dr. Kamal Bawa won the prestigious MIDORI Prize in Biodiversity 2014. He was honoured for his great research that included climate change in the Himalayas.
He will receive this award of USD 100,000 in October during the Conference of Parties (COP-12) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Apart from Dr. Kamal Bawa following were two other winners :
- Dr. Alfred Oteng-Yeboah from Ghana
- Dr. Bibiana Vila from Argentina

The Midori Prize for Biodiversity was founded by the AEON Environmental Foundation, Japan in 2010.
Airtel divests 3500 towers in Africa to Eaton Towers
On 8th September 2014, Bharti Airtel Limited announced an agreement for the divestment of over 3,500 telecom towers to Eaton Towers from its African operations.
Airtel will be selling and leasing back towers under a 10 year contract in six countries across its African operations.
Though agreements are subject to statutory and regulatory approvals in the respective countries. The sale of 3500 towers to Eaton Towers is a part of Airtel plan to sell most of its more than 15000 mobile phone towers in 20 African countries to cut costs of maintenance.
Venice Film Festival - Indian movie Court won best debut award
On 7th September 2014, Indian movie Court won Luigi De Laurentiis award for a Debut Feature at the 71st Venice Film Festival. This movie is written and directed by Indian writer Chaitanya Tamhane. This film shows a multilingual courtroom drama. Thus movie won prize of 100000 US dollars.
