Indian-American doctor Mitul Kadakia won national award for excellence
Among the International Current affairs, Indian-American cardiologist Mitul Kadakia has been granted the 2014 Gregory Braden Memorial Fellow of the Year Award by the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions Foundation.
The award, considered a tremendous prestige in the cardiology community, is given to one graduating interventional cardiology fellow per year, out of the thousands in the US.
Mitul Kadakia is currently a fellow in Interventional Cardiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. His clinical and research interests include new devices and therapies for coronary and valvular heart disease and bleeding reduction in acute coronary syndrome.
Gregory Braden Memorial Fellow of the Year Award:
The award is given to one graduating interventional cardiology fellow per year out of the thousands in the US and is considered as a prestigious award in the cardiology community. Candidates for the award are evaluated based on their interventional skills in multiple modalities, personal contribution to cardiovascular research, authorship in cardiovascular research journals, promise for making contributions to cardiovascular research, and dedication to patient care and well-being.
New dancing frog species found in Western Ghats
In the Western Ghats of southern India biologistshas discovered 14 new species of dancing frogs. These acrobatic frogs were found by Indian biologists. Scientific name of Indian dancing frogs is Micrixalidae and their family comprises a single genus Micrixalus. Name of the species has been derived by their style of unusual kicks used to attract the mates.
It is believed that Indian dancing frog family evolved about 85 million years ago. Though the matter of concern is, biologists identified that their habitat appears to becoming increasingly dry.
This study including listing of new species was published in Ceylon Journal of Science on 8 May 2014. This discovery has brought the number of known Indian dancing frog species to 24. The species were discovered after 12 years of extensive field studies that was conducted across the mountains of Western Ghats in states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra.

SC ordered CBI probe into Saradha chit fund scam
On 9th May 2014, Supreme Court of India ordered CBI inquiry into multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam. Court asked CBI to investigate chit fund scam. The apex court asked the West Bengal government to hand over all Saradha chit fund scam cases to CBI. It also said that the CBI will investigate all cases against 44 chit fund companies in Odisha. The SC also asked the Enforcement Directorate to join CBI in finding the money trail. The ED is already conducting a probe into the scam. The apex court said it wanted the chit fund scam in these states to be probed by an independent agency like CBI because of involvement of politicians and influential persons in the cases.
The order was passed by a bench of Supreme Court that was led by Justice TS Thakur. The bench said that an in-depth probe is required by the premier investigative agency in aspects of inter-state ramifications and also due to larger angle of conspiracy in the case.
Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Janardhan Reddy passed away
On 9th May 2014, Former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Janardhan Reddy passed away at the age of 80. N Janardhan Reddy, a sitting Rajya Sabha member from Andhra Pradesh, served as chief minister from December, 1990 to October, 1992.
He is survived by his wife and four sons. Reddy took a tough stand against Naxalities and had survived an attack on his life by the extremists in 2007.
- He was born in Wakadu on 20 February 1935.
- He became the AP Congress Committee president in 1988.
- He was elected to Lok Sabha from Bapatla, Narasaraopeta and Visakhapatnam three times in 1998, 1999 and 2004.
India's Punj Lloyd bags Rs 1,270-crore expressway project in Yemen
- On 6th May 2014, Indian construction major, Punj Llyod won a 211 million US dollar expressway project in Yemen. The Ministry of Public Works and Highways of Yemen confirmed the construction of a 42 km, 2x3 lane dual carriageway projects between Doraigh and Noubat Dokaim. The project is funded by Saudi Development Fund.
The project will be located at distance of 60 km from the port city of Aden and comprises
- Construction of 210 lane-km the new carriageway greenfield project
- Additional road works
- Excavation of more than ten million cubic metres
