Jallikattu and bullock cart races banned by SC
On 7th May 2014, Supreme Court of India banned use of bulls for Jallikattu (bull-fighting) events or bullock-cart races. This ban is imposed across the country. As court's verdict said that even bulls have rights against torture and hoped that the parliament would elevate the rights of animals to that of constitutional rights. In its observation the bench said that an animal also has honour and dignity and cannot be arbitrarily deprived of its rights.
The bench was headed by Justice KS Radhakrishnan. The bench also termed that rights guaranteed to the bulls under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act 1960 could not be taken away.
Waqar Younis is new head coach of Pakistan cricket team
Among the sports current affairs, Waqar Younis, who is former fast bowler of Pakistan, has been appointed national coach for two years. Waqar Younis will be joining his new role in June 2014. He has previously served as bowling coach of the Pakistan side in 2006-07 and briefly in 2009, and as head coach in 2010-11.
Pakistan successfully test fired Hatf-III Ghaznavi ballistic missile
On 8th May 2014, Pakistan successfully test-fired Hataf-III Ghaznavi missile. Hataf-III Ghaznavi missile is a short range surface-to-surface Ballistic Missile. It is also capable of carrying nuclear and conventional weapons up to 290 kilometers.
Travel planning portal tripigator.com launched in Partnership with Incredible India
India's travel planning engine tripgator.com in partnership with Ministry of Tourism has been launched. It has been created by IT firm WorthYourHolidays.
Secretary Parvez Dewan launched this portal which was selected as "official travel planner" by the Ministry of Tourism. The travel search engine is aimed to provide all travel itineraries in one tab to reduce traveller's efforts.
Three IITians Mukul Garg, Piyush Grover and Karteek Narumanchi have come together to help the Incredible India site of the tourism ministry through their own tripigator.com.
Tripigator is designed to aggregate information about cities, tourist spots, transportation, hotels, culture, weather and visa applications. It will cater to domestic and global travellers.
