    Renowned cinematographer VK Murthy passed away

    Renowned cinematographer VK Murthy passed away on 7th April 2014 at his residence in Shankarapuram. He was also Dada Saheb Phalke awardee. He was 91 years old and was famous for his camera work in Guru Dutt’s classics like Pyaasa and Sahib, Bibi Aur Ghulam. He also received International Indian Film Academy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005 among many other awards.

    Important to note : 

    VK Murthy was the first technician to be honoured with the Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 2008. 

    Ravi Chauhan appointed as MD for India by SAP

    SAP has announced the appointment of Ravi Chauhan as Managing Director for SAP India with immediate effect. Ravi Chauhan will be responsible for driving SAP India’s growth strategy and operations across the country.

    Important to note : 

    SAP was founded in Walldorf, Germany in 1972 by five ex-IBM engineers. SAP stands for Systeme, Andwendungen, Produkte in der Datenverarbeitung which translated to English means Systems, Applications, Products in Data Processing. 

    Demographer Ashish Bose dies at 83

    Ashish Bose, veteran demographer, 83, died in New Delhi due to illness on 7 April 2014. Asish Bose was best known for coining the term BIMARU in one page of research paper to then Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi.

     

    Important to note : 

    Demographer : a scientist who studies the growth and density of populations and their vital statistics.

    Heena Sidhu on India clinched World's No. 1 spot in 10 mts air pistol event

    India's Heena Sidhu has clinched the World's Number One spot in 10 metres air pistol event.

    The rankings was released by International Shooting Sport Federation claimed that Sindhu was successful in achieving the World Number 1 spot through her performances in the recent events. 

    Earlier, Sindhu won a gold medal in the Asian Air Gun Championship in March 2014 and she also finished with a silver medal at the ISSF rifle or pistol World Cup in Fort Benning in United States. 

    Heena Sidhu shot a world record score to win a gold medal in the world Cup 2013 in Munich.

    China dug the 7 km deep borehole over Tibetan Plateau in search for oil

    Chinese exploration team drilled a seven kilometer deep borehole in the Himalayan region of Tibet in search of oil and natural gas resources of the region. On Tibetan plateau Sinopec and China National Petroleum Corporation carried out this exploration project.

    In August 2013, the China Geological Survey, under the Ministry of Land and Resources, signed a 20 million yuan (USD 3.5 million) exploration agreement with Sinopec after the Tibet region showed enormous oil and natural gas potential.

    Sale of Self testing kits for HIV legalised by UK

    On 6th April 2014, A new law legalizing sale of self-testing kits for HIV came into force in United Kingdom (UK). The new law allows individuals to buy the self-testing kits available on shops and self-diagnose for HIV at home itself. Earlier this law was approved by the UK Government in September 2013.

    Testing could involve taking a small drop of blood from a finger, or a swab from the inside of the mouth which can be easily read by people with no medical knowledge or training.

    This is considered important by experts as about 25 per cent of HIV positive people in the UK do not know they are HIV positive and are vulnerable to other people to pass it.

    Arunachal Pradesh Capital Itanagar gets its first passenger train

    7th April 2014 was a great day for the capital of Arunachal Pradesh - Itanagar, which got its first passenger train. Train was having total 10 passengers and two goods compartments with a diesel engine.

    Earlier Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced introducing train service in his package for the state on January 31, 2008. Itanagar thus becomes the second state capital among the eight north-eastern states after Guwahati to be put on the railway map of India. The train’s first journey started from Dekargaon and ended at Naharlagun after covering a distance of 181 km.
