Vice Admiral Anil Chopra took over as Commander-in-Chief of Western Naval Command
Vice Admiral Anil Chopra, the second senior-most officer of the Indian Navy, took over as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command (WNC), at a ceremonial parade at INS Shikra on 06th June 2014.
Prior to his tenure in the East, he was the Director General Indian Coast Guard. Under his helm, the Coast Guard saw an exponential increase in both its force levels, and operational deployments.
For his distinguished service, Vice Admiral Anil Chopra was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2007 and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 2013. He was commissioned into Indian Navy on 1 July 1975.
Quebec became first province of Canada to adopt Right-to-Die Legislation
In a historic vote in the National Assembly, Quebec has become the first province to legalize doctor-assisted death as part of comprehensive end-of-life legislation.
Bill 52, An Act respecting end-of-life care, received broad support on Thursday from nearly 80 per cent of MNAs. Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard allowed his caucus to vote according to their conscience. The 22 MNAs who voted against were all Liberals, including 10 cabinet ministers.
The legislation outlines the conditions in which a terminally ill adult patient who is of sound mind may request continuous palliative sedation that would lead to death.
Whereas, Quebec defended it by terming it a health issue, which falls under the jurisdiction of the province and not federal jurisdiction as it is not a criminal act. It was also defended by Quebec Premier Philippe Cauillard by terming that it deals with end of life care and not euthanasia.
Lithuania to become 19th country to adopt Euro as currency from 2015
The European Union Commission released its 2014 Convergence Report on 4 June 2014. Convergence Report examined whether Member States satisfy the conditions for adopting the single currency Euro. Lithuania to become 19th country to adopt Euro as currency from 1 January 2015.
As per the report, Lithuania met all of the criteria among the eight countries which showed interest to join Euro club.
The Lithuanian central bank estimates that not being part of the eurozone cost Lithuania roughly 2 percent of GDP in increased borrowing costs during the world financial crisis.
Madhuri Dixit appointed as brand ambassador of health campaign "Mamta Abhiyan"
State government of Madhya Pradesh appointed Madhuri Dixit as the brand ambassador of maternal and child health campaign. Name of this campaign is "Mamta Abhiyan". The campaign will start from 26th June 2014 with an event organised in collaboration of Bhopal unit of UNICEF.
Health Department launched Mamta Abhiyan in 2013 as part of a move to bring down the maternal and infant mortality rates and improve maternal and child health in the State by providing better facilities.
40th G-7 summit 2014 was held at Brussels
From 4th June 2014 to 5th June 2014, 40th G-7 summit 2014 was held at Justus Lipsius building, Brussels at the Council of the European Union.
It was the first time that the European Union hosted a G7 summit. The summit is jointly represented by the European Council President Herman van Rompuy and the European Commission President.
