Appointment of Foreign Coaches in Athletics approved by - Sports Minister Vijay Goel
Union Minister of State (I/C) for Youth Affairs and Sports Vijay Goel on 6th April 2017 approved the appointment of two foreign coaches and two support staff in the discipline of athletics.
More Information
- The appointed people are Dave Smith, Galina P. Bukharina, Dmitry Kislev and Elmira Kisleva.
- The appointment of foreign coaches and support staff have been made up to 2020 Olympics and they will be subject to performance review annually.
- The Foreign Coach Selection committee recommended appointments
World Health Day observed - On 7th April 2017
World Health Day observed on 7th April 2017 with the theme 'Depression: Let's Talk.
On this occasion, the World Health Organization (WHO) is leading a one-year global campaign on depression which is the main cause of ill-health and disability worldwide. The goal of the campaign is that people with depression, everywhere in the world, both seek and get help.
Interesting Highlights
- The World Health Day is being celebrated annually on 7th April to mark the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization.
- As per WHO report, more than 300 million people are now living with depression, which is an increase of more than 18 per cent between 2005 and 2015.
- At worst, depression can lead to suicide, now the second major cause of death among 15-29-year old people.
Misbah-ul-Haq announces international retirement after - West Indies series
The Pakistan Test captain, Misbah-ul-Haq announced on 6th April 2017 that he would be retiring from international cricket after the end of the Test series in West Indies. However, he will continue to play cricket at the domestic level.
Important Highlights
- Misbah is a middle-order batsman.
- Born on 28th May 1974, Misbah-ul-Haq Khan Niazi leads the Test Pakistan national cricket team.
- He also served as the One Day International (ODI) captain until his retirement from ODI cricket after the 2015 Cricket World Cup.
- He has the world record of scoring most runs without century in ODI career.
- He was also one of the five Cricketers of the Year, alongside compatriot Younis Khan, chosen by the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack for 2016.
PV Sindhu reaches best World No.2 ranking in - Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings
The Indian Rio Olympics silver medallist, PV Sindhu reached her career-best ranking of World no.2 in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings, which were released on 6th April 2017. Her new rank is just second to Saina Nehwal, who was named World No. 1 in 2015.
Important Highlights
- Sindhu recently clinched the India Open title after defeating her Olympic final rival Carolina Marin of Spain in the final match.
- But the shuttler was rewarded with the No. 2 ranking for her overall performance in 2016 and 2017.
- She climbed up three spots with 75759 points, superseding Japan’s Akane Yamugachi who moved back few places from Rank 2 to 4.
- Carolina Marin with 75664 points remained in the third place.
The Yojana to provide subsidised food to the poor launched by - MP Govt
The Madhya Pradesh government is all set to launch Deendayal Antyodaya Rasoi Yojana in its districts on the evening of 7th April 2017. The scheme aims to provide food to the poor in urban areas at a subsidised rate. It would be launched in 51 district headquarters across the state in the first phase only. State’s Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan at Gwalior will be inaugerating this Yojana.
Important Highlights
- This scheme involves opening of canteens that will provide a full meal at Rs 5.
- Full meal would include four rotis, one sabzi, and dal.
- The Thali would be made available between 11am to 3pm.
- Also, wheat and rice would also be made available at the canteens at Rs one each through fair price shops.
- This arrangement is aimed to feed at least 2000 people at a time.
- More centres will be opened in the big cities on need basis.
- According to the Urban Development Minister Maya Singh,though the food would be cheap, it would be delicious, nutritious and of a great quality.
- District Level Coordination and Monitoring Committee will ensure the smooth implementation of the scheme.
