Missile destroyer INS Ranjit to be decommissioned on - 6th May 2019

The Indian Navy’s frontline missile destroyer INS Ranjit will be decommissioned afterward 36 years of service. It was commissioned on September 15th, 1983, with Captain Vishnu Bhagwat in command. The
decommission ceremony will be organised at Visakhapatnam’s naval dockyard on 6th May 2019.

• It was 3rd of 5 Kashin-Class anti-aircraft guided missile destroyers construct by former USSR. As of
  2019, only sinhle Kashin-class destroyers ship leftovers in service with Russian Navy, and 5 with Indian Navy as Rajput-class destroyers.
• It is 1st of 5 Rajput class destroyers to be commissioned out of service.
• It was built with serial number “Yard 2203” in 61 Communards shipyard in Nikolev town, Ukraine.
• She was released officially on 16th June 1979 and was given its Russian name Lovkly meaning ‘Agile’.
• With a slogan of “Sada Rane Jayate”, INS Ranjit has been at forefront in keeping country secure and
  deployed in a number of operations counting Indian Peace Keeping Force operations and Operation Talwar in 1999 during Kargil war.

CFTRI to send food to Cyclone Fani hit areas in - Odisha

Mysore based Central Food Technological Research Institute, has cooked approximately 1 lakh meals for distribution in cyclone Fani hit areas of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. The severe cyclonic storm Fani had lately made a landfall impact on May 3rd, 2019 in Puri, Odisha coast.

It was recognized in 1950 and is HQ in Mysore, Karnataka. Its resource centres are in Hyderabad, Lucknow & Mumbai.

Chief Economic Advisor Krishnamurthy Subramanian designated as Advisory Council Member in - 15th Finance Commission

The Chief Economic Advisor to Central government, Dr.Krishnamurthy Subramanian is designated as 12th member of Advisory Council of 15th Finance Commission.
Advisory Council
It now has 12 members, which include renowned economists Surjit Bhalla, Arvind Virmani, Indira Rajaraman and M Govinda Rao among others.
Role and Duties

• To advise Finance Commission on any relevant matter/subject related to Terms of Reference of
  Commission.
• To support Finance Commission in making any research paper/study which would improve commission’s understanding on issue contained in its Terms of Reference.
• To assist expand Finance Commission understanding in accepting best national and international practices on matters of fiscal devolution.
• To assist improve quality, reach and enforcement of Finance Commission endorsements.

Finance Commission
It is formed under article 280 of Constitution by President of India. It mainly passes its endorsements on distribution of tax revenues between Union and States and amongst states themselves. It is selected for a time period of 5 years and comprise of 5 members including 1 chairman and 4 other
members.

Who has been designated as NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander ? - US Air Force General Tod Wolters

The US Air Force General Tod D.Wolters took oath as top military officer of North Atlantic Treaty
Organisation, at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation’s military HQs in Mons, southern Belgium.

He is a former United States pilot who has served as commander of United States Air Forces in Europe & United States Air Forces in Africa. He has also served in Afghanistan & Iraq.
He will succeed United States Army General Curtis M. Scaparrotti to become new ‘Supreme Allied
Commander Europe’ for a term of 2-3 years.
He will also be a commander of United States forces in Europe.

A Supreme Allied Commander Europe is commander of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation’s Allied
Command Operations. He is based at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Casteau, Belgium.
He also leads Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe. Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers
Europe is Allied Command Operations’ HQ.
Supreme Allied Commander Europe is 2nd highest military position within North Atlantic Treaty
Organisation. In terms of superiority, it is only after Chairman of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation
Military Committee.

an American military officer.

Who are awarded with World Press Freedom Prize 2019 ? - Myanmar Journalists

The World Press Freedom Prize also known as ‘UNESCO World Press Freedom Prize’ is officially awarded every year by Director-General of UNESCO, on event of World Press Freedom Day observed on 3rd May.

In 2019 award would be shared by 2 prisoned Myanmar journalists ‘Wa Lone’ & ‘Kyaw Soe Oo’ who
reported on alleged human rights violations in state of Rakhine, Myanmar.
The Reuters reporters are serving 7 years prison sentence in Myanmar. They are charged with breaking
nation’s secrets law for their journalistic investigation on military’s brutal crackdown & assassinations of Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state.
Significance
It regards a person/organization/institution which has accomplished an outstanding contribution for
defending & encouraging freedom of press anywhere in world, especially when attained it in face of
danger by fighting all odds. It consists of a cash Award worth $25000.

Defence Ministry approves Indian Navy’s proposal to acquire 10  ‘Kamov Ka-31’ helicopters from - Russia

Ministry of Defence has sanctioned Indian Navy’s proposal to obtain 10 Kamov-31 helicopters from
Russia. The deal worth Rupees 3600 crore, is an initiative to fortify Indian Navies capability against aerial fears to its aircraft carriers and large warships.
Kamov Ka-31
It is a military helicopter built by a Russian rotorcraft manufacturing company “JSC Kamov” and
development began in 1987 for Soviet Navy. It is presently in service in Russia, China and India in Naval
role. These are Airborne Early Warning and Control helicopters grounded on Ka-27 design.
Important Highlights
The Kamov-31 helicopters would be deployed on Indian Navy’s aircraft carriers and warships together with INS Vikrant and Grigorovich-class frigates.
Its positioning is largely intended at sanitising air space around battle groups which are headed by
aircraft carriers while carrying out defence activities in open sea/Anti-submarine warfare operations.
The decision was granted at Defence Acquisition Council meeting led by Defence Minister Nirmala
Sitharaman.
The Kamov-31 deal is a follow-on order, therefore, once processed by Navy, it will straight be offered
before cabinet committee on security for final sanction.

Last captive White Tiger named Bajirao died at - Sanjay Gandhi National Park

The last captive white tiger called ‘Bajirao’ passed away recently at Sanjay Gandhi National Park, in Borivali Mumbai suburb. He was 18 years and died due to old-age related problems. He was born at national park in 2001.
He suffered from chronic ankyloses resulting into abnormal stiffening and immobility of joint, on left
shoulder and chronic senile generalised arthritis from last 4 years.
About White tigers

They are not a separate sub-species of tiger. They are basically a skin-color variant of the Bengal Tiger.
Their white colour is due to absence of red/yellow pheomelanin pigment, and presence of exclusive
recessive genes. They are also known as Bleached Tiger.
Characteristics and Distribution in India
They have white to almost cream coloured fur, pink nose, black or grey or chocolate coloured stripes.
They were found in MP, Assam, West Bengal, Bihar and in Sunderbans area. Now there are no white tigers in wild as their complete population in world lives in captivity. The last white tiger reported in wild was captured in Rewa forest in MP.

Nepal’s 18 years old girl sets Guinness World Records for Longest Dancing for - 126 hours

An 18 years old girl from Nepal named Bandana formed a Guinness World Records on “Longest Dancing
Marathon by an Individual”. She danced wholly to Nepalese music uninterruptedly for 126 hours.
Old Record
She destitute record formed by India’s Kalamandalam Hemlatha, who danced uninterruptedly for 123
hours and 15 minutes in 2011.
She performed classical dance form Mohiniyattam and formed record at age of 37.

Who  officially  has been crowned Rama X of Thailand ? -  King Maha Vajiralongkorn

Thailand formally crowned its new King Maha Vajiralongkorn with ‘Great Crown of Victory’ i.e. symbols
of kingship. He received a symbolic 9-tiered umbrella conferring him as “King Rama X of Thailand’. This
coronation ceremony marks 1st ascension of a new monarch in last 7 decades.

• He became crown prince and formal heir to throne in 1972.
• He has been on throne since 2016, but as per to Thai tradition he cannot be measured a divine
  representative on Earth nor main patron of Buddhism until he is declared sacred. For this, 3 days
  coronation ceremony started in Bangkok on 4th May 2019.
• He is now termed Rama X/10th monarch of the Chakri dynasty.
• Chakri dynasty, has been reigning since 1782. The last coronation was organised for king’s father
  Bhumibol Adulyadej in 1950.
• He lately married to his royal consort who would now be new Queen Suthida. This is kings 4th marriage.
