    US President Barack Obama announced new rules to cut carbon pollution by 30% by 2030

    US President Barack Obama on 2 June 2014 announced new rules to cut carbon pollution from existing Power plants by 30% till 2030. 

    The announcement involved to cut carbon dioxide emission 30 percent from 2005 level. The new rule was announced by The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  It also announced to cut by 2030 particle pollution, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxide by more than 25 per cent as a co-benefit. 

    The new rules could transform the power sector. Currently, US Government relied on coal for nearly 38 percent of electricity. 

    Indian Army launched the Army Veterans Grievance Handling portal

    On 5th June 2014, The Indian Army launched the Army Veterans Grievance Handling (AVGH) Portal. It is internet based web portal. It will facilitate the large fraternity of veterans and their dependents to take up their grievances with the concerned agencies.

    The portal was developed and designed by National Informatics Centre (NIC) Ltd. It is one of the initiatives of the Indian Army to reach out its Veterans & Veer Naris.

    The portal and can be accessed at www.indianarmyveterans.gov.in.

    Sanjay Kapoor appointed as Micromax Chairman

     Former CEO of Bharti Airtel company Sanjay Kapoor was appointed as Micromax Chairman on 5th June 2014. 

    Sanjay was the chief executive officer for India and South Asia of Airtel from March 2010 till May 2013.

    Sanjay remained as one of the key executives in building Bharti Airtel from being one of the many players in the industry to making it a leading telecom player. Micromax is an Indian consumer electronics company headquartered in Gurgaon, Haryana, India. It is in the business of manufacturing of Mobile Telephones, Tablet Computers, 3G Datacards and LED Televisions.

    Irish Author Eimear McBride won Baileys Prize for fiction

     On 4th June 2014, Irish author Eimear McBride won the 2014 Bailey's Women's Prize for Fiction. She won this award for her first novel "A Girl is a Half-Formed Thing". 

    Other books on the shortlist were Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Americanah, Hannah Kent's Burial Rites, Jhumpa Lahiri's The Lowland, Audrey Magee's The Undertaking and Donna Tartt's The Goldfinch.

    Eimear McBride wrote the book when she was 27 and only found a publisher a decade later when the Galley Beggar Press paid her a 600 pound advance for what was then its second book.

     

     

    EU lifted ban imposed on drug exports from Ranbaxy's Toansa Plant

    The European health regulator on 5 June 2014 lifted suspension imposed on export of drugs produced at the Ranbaxy's Toansa plant in Punjab in India. The imposed ban was lifted by terming that the medicines produced at the site don't pose any threat to public health despite having number of manufacturing deficiencies.

    Based on the assessment report of the regulatory authorities, the GMP certificate of the plant will be reinstated which was suspended in January 2014 in European Union. The certificate will be re-entered into EudraGMDP, the EU database that contains GMP certificates.
