Spain midfielder Xavi retires from international football
On 5th August 2014, The Spain midfielder Xavi has announced his retirement from international football. The Barcelona player was a member of the teams that won successive major tournaments at Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and Euro 2012.
Xavi told a press conference that he had decided to retire from international football. Most importantly he had represented his country for a record 133 times.
On 15th Nov 2000 he made his international debut against Netherlands.
Prasar Bharati signed MoU with Deutsche Welle for Distribution
On 5th August 2014, Prasar Bharati, India’s Public Service Broadcaster signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Deutsche Welle, the German public service broadcaster for distribution of Doordarshan’s overseas India channel, DD India on a DTH platform.
This MoU was signed in the presence of senior officers of Prasar Bharati, Ministries of Information and Broadcasting and External Affairs in New Delhi.
With the help of this agreement DD will able to expand its coverage across Europe, Asia, North Africa and even up to Australia. Apart from it, with its help DD will get full access to Middle Eastern countries.
Cartoonist Pran, the creator of Chacha Chaudhury, dies at 75
On 6th August 2014, the eminent cartoonist Pran Kumar Sharma passed away. He was 75 years old. Pran Kumar Sharma created the comic book character like Chacha Chaudhary and Sabu. As a cartoonist, he began his career in 1960 for a Delhi-based newspaper Milap with a comic strip Daabu. He was born on 15th August 1938 in Kasur near Lahore. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award 2001 from the Indian Institute of Cartoonists.
China to Ban All Coal Use in Beijing by 2020
On 4th August 2014, Beijing's Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau announced the plans to ban coal use in Beijing and five other districts by the end of 2020. The purpose of the ban is to fight increasing levels of air pollution in China's major cities.
The Bureau also decided to prioritize electricity and natural gas for heating.
Beijing's Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau posted the plan on its website on Monday, saying the city would instead prioritize electricity and natural gas for heating.
The official Xinhua News Agency said coal accounted for a quarter of Beijing's energy consumption in 2012 and 22 percent of the fine particles floating in the city's air. Motor vehicles, industrial production and general dust also contributed to pollution in the 21 million-person city.
Hungarian Olympic javelin champion Angela Nemeth died
On 5th August 2014, the 1968 Olympic Javelin champion of Hungary Angela Nemeth passed away. She was 68 years old.
She won a Javelin throw gold medal in 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, Mexico with career best throw of 60.36 meter. Till date, she is the only Hungarian woman to win an Olympic title in a throwing event.
