Marylebone Cricket Club won the match played to celebrate 200 years of Lord's Cricket Ground
On 5th July 2014, Marylebone Cricket Club XI won the match played to celebrate 200-years of Lord's Cricket Ground. Captain of MCC XI was Sachin Tendulkar and Rest of the World XI was led by Shane Warne.
MCC XI played first and made a score of 296 for 3 wickets, Aaron Finch made 181 unbeatable. Yuvraj Singh pLaying from Rest of the World XI made 132 runs.
Novak Djokovic beats Roger Federer to won Men's Wimbledon Tennis Open
On 6th July 2014, Novak Djokovic of Serbia won the Men's Wimbledon Tennis Open. He defeated Roger Federer of Switzerland 6-7(7), 6-4, 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-4. This is the second Wimbledon title for 27-year-old, Djokovic and seventh career Grand Slam. Djokovic won his first Wimbledon title in 2011.
By this win Djokovic came on top spot by replacing Rafael Nadal.
M S Mehta appointed as CEO of Reliance Infrastructure
On 7th July 2014, Reliance Infrastructure appointed M S Mehta as Chief Executive Officer (CEO). He took charge as CEO for a period of five years. He will succeed Lalit Jalan who held this post for more than seven years.
MS Mehta is a mechanical engineer and done MBA from IIM Ahmedabad. Earlier, he was working with Vedanta Resources as its Group CEO for five years. The company also elevated Lalit Jalan as Director - Corporate Strategy and Affairs with effect from today.
Fatwas of Shariat courts cannot be used to punish innocent people: SC
On 7th July 2014, The Supreme Court of India ruled that the fatwa's "cannot be used to punish innocent". The court said a fatwa has no legal sanction, and restrained Shariat courts from unilaterally issuing directives that may affect the rights of Muslims.
It said that no legal status has been granted to the Sharia Courts or religious decrees of fatwas, thus they are illegal if it violates fundamental rights of an individual.
The SC judgment was delivered while hearing a petition that asked whether Shariat courts are unconstitutional or not. The petition was filed by a Delhi-based advocate Vishwa Lochan Madan in 2005, which challenged the parallel courts run by institutions like the Darul Qaza and Darul-Iftaa and have an impact on the fundamental rights of the Muslim citizens.
The decision was delivered by the bench headed by Justice CK Prasad of SC.
Petra Kvitova won the Women's Wimbledon Tennis Open
On 5th July 2014, Petra Kvitova of Czechslovakia won the women's single of Wimbledon Tennis Open of 2014. She defeated the Canadian Eugenie Bouchard 6-3, 6-0. With this win, Kvitova collected a reward of 1760000 Pound and the Venus Rosewater Dish, symbol of the greatest prize in the women’s game.
Petra Kvitova with this win, will move up to fourth in the world rankings.
