India slipped to 3rd place in ICC ODI rankings
Among the sports current affairs, On 4th June 2014, ICC ODI team rankings were released in Dubai, in which India slipped to 3rd Place.
Top ten teams are :

Indian batsman Virat kohli retained his position as number one ODI batsman. Kohli is followed by South Africa's AB Devilliers and Australia's George Bailey.
Saeed Ajmal leads the list of bowlers and is followed by Dale Steyn and Sunil Narine.
Three Ancient Hindu temple statues returned to Cambodia from United States
Three Ancient Hindu temple statues were returned to Cambodia, these statues were stolen from the Koh Ker temple in Siem Reap province temple.
Statues were of mythological figures Duryodhana, Balarama and Bhima. The statues were returned from the United States.
Authorities said the statues were looted from the Koh Ker temple in Siem Reap province, which also houses Angkor Wat, during the civil war. Experts said the statues were hacked off their bases and smuggled out, eventually ending up with collectors. A ceremony was held in the capital city Phnom Penh to welcome the statues back.
Indian-American Shefali Razdan Duggal appointed as member of Holocaust Memorial Council by Obama
On 3rd June 2014, Shefali Razdan Duggal, who was top Indian-American fundraiser, was appointed as the member of the US Holocaust Memorial Council by US President Barack Obama.
The United States Holocaust Memorial Council was established by Congress in 1980 to lead the nation in commemorating the Holocaust and to raise private funds for and build the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The council which meets twice a year consists of 55 members appointed by the President as well as five members each from the Senate and House of representatives and three ex-officio members from the Departments of Education, Interior and State.
At time of this appointment as Member in the Holocaust Memorial Council she was a member of the Democratic National Committee's (DNC) National Finance Committee and National co-chair of the DNC's Women's Leadership forum.
World Environment Day observed across the globe
Among the Important days of the year, On 5th June 2014, World Environment Day was observed across the globe. The day is observed every year to raise the awareness around the globe for taking positive action to protect nature and planet earth.
Every year it a theme associated with it. Theme for World Environment Day 2014 was "Small islands and climate change" and Slogan was "raise your voice not the Sea level".
United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) established in 1972 is the voice of United Nations for the environment. UNEP is a body that acts as a catalyst, advocate, educator and facilitator to promote the wise use and sustainable development of the global environment.

RTI Act is applicable to private schools too, rules CIC
On 4th June 2014, Central Information Commission (CIC) ruled that the private schools which were governed by a law such as the Delhi Education Act come under the provisions of Right to Information (RTI) Act.
It ruled that aided or unaided, the school is duty bound under Sections 4 and 8 of Delhi Education Act 1973 to abide by the regulatory conditions of service, payment of salaries as prescribed for which school has to maintain records which provide an inherent and implied right to information to their employees.
Under Right to Education Act 2009 also, the recognised school is under an obligation to appoint eligible teachers and provide them with prescribed wages. This also reveals that it has given inherent right to information to the teachers from their employers.
India Gets Elected to the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage
On 4th June 2014, India has been elected for the next four years (2014-2018) to the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Elections to this Committee at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris by the General Assembly of the States Parties to the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, India won the election by a resounding 135 votes against a total of 142 votes cast by Member States who were present and voting. India recorded the highest number of votes amongst the ten countries which contested the election and have won.
The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage has 24 members who are elected for a term of four years. The core functions of the Committee are to safeguard the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH), ensuring respect for the intangible cultural heritage of nations, groups and individuals, as also to raise awareness at the local, national and international levels of the importance of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
This is the second time that India has been elected to the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the earlier term being from 2006-2010.
Russia lifted arms embargo to Pakistan
Russia on 4 June 2014 lifted arm embargo on Pakistan. Sergey Chemezov, head of Russian state-run technologies corporation Rostec announced that Russia has lifted an embargo on supplying weapons and military hardware to Pakistan.
Russia is negotiating the sales of Mi-35 helicopters to Pakistan. Russia has been India's largest defence supplier with military sales worth over 40 billion US dollar since the first MiG-21s in 1963 to the present-day Sukhoi-30MKI fighters.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad re-elected for third term
On 4th June 2014, President Bashar al-Assad of Syria won the Presidential election for the third time, which is an important news among international current affairs.
The Presidential Election result was announced by the Parliament Speaker Jihad Laham on 4th June 2014. After winning the elections he will remain president of Syria for seven more years.
Bashar al-Assad belongs to Ba'ath Party. He won 88.7 percent of the vote casted in favour of him. Total vote turn out was 73.42 %.
The polling took place only in government-controlled areas, but not in parts of the north and east held by rebels.
