    World Tennis Championship title in Abu Dhabi bagged by Andy Murray

    Among the important Sports Current Affairs, On 4th January 2015, Scottish professional tennis player Andy Murray won ATP World Tennis Championship at Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi. He won this title after world number one Novak Djokovic withdrew from the final match due to illness.

    By this Andy Murray won his first title for this year (2015). 

    International Hindi Conference to be held in New Jersey in April 2015

    It was announced on 4th January 2015 that International Hindi Conference will be hosted by New Jersey. It is scheduled to be held in April 2015 which will be attended by many Hindi scholars from various parts of the world, in particular from the United States and India. Many topics such as Hindi in higher education, Expanding the use of Hindi in businesses and commerce, Community support for Hindi etc will be discussed in this Conference.

    LED-based Home and Street Lighting National Programme launched by PM

    On 5th January 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a National Programme for LED-based Home and Street Lighting in New Delhi. This programme is aimed at reducing energy consumption

    Under the Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme (DELP) a scheme for Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulb distribution was also launched. 

    Under this project installation of LED bulbs for domestic and street-lighting in 100 cities is targeted till March 2016. In Delhi consumers will be getting LED bulbs at 10 Rupees and rest amount will be recovered from electricity bill. It is estimated that per LED bulb will save 162 rupees and annually it will be saving 24 crore units every year once implemented.

    Director General of SAI Jiji Thomson resigned

    On 2nd January 2015, Jiji Thomson resigned as Director General of Sports Authority of India (SAI). He said that central government delayed his promotion as Sports Secretary for six months before he finally requested for his immediate repatriation to his parent cadre in Kerala. 

    Jiji Thomson is IAS officer of Kerala cadre of 1980 batch. 

    Sutirtha Bhattacharya took charge as CMD of Coal India Limited

    On 5th January 2015, Sutirtha Bhattacharya took charge as Coal India Limited as full time Chairman and Managing Director as this position was vacant for more than six months.

    As the time of appointment he was CMD of the state-owned Singareni Collieries Company. Sutirtha Bhattacharya is 985 batch IAS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre. 

    Arvind Panagariya appointed as the first Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog

    On 5th January 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appointed economist Arvind Panagariya as first Vice Chairman of National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog. Arvind Panagariya is an Indian American economist and Professor of Economics at Columbia University. Arvind Panagariya holds a Ph.D in Economics from Princeton University and is author of around 10 books. In March 2008 his book "India: The Emerging Giant" was published by Oxford University Press, New York.

    As you are already aware that 65 year old Planning Commission has been replaced with NITI Aayog by PM recently.
