Where did the Kochi arachnologists discovered rare spiders - Western Ghats
Among the important National Current Affairs, On 3rd April 2015, rare spiders were discovered in Western Ghats by Kochi arachnologists. The sighting of a huntsman and jumping spider in Western Ghats was recorded by Researchers at Division of Arachnology. This rare species of spiders belong to the Salticidae and Sparassidae families. The research team comprise of Pradeep Kumar M.S., Fr. Jobi Malamel and Dr. Mathew M.J. and were led by the director of the Division of Arachnology, Dr. P.A. Sebastian.
The huntsman spider was spotted at Ponmudi, while the researchers found the jumping spider at the Malayattoor and Bhoothathankettu reserve forest. Huntsman spiders are known for their mode of hunting and speed. Many of these spiders make a substrate-borne sound deliberately when a chemical left by a nearby female of their species is detected by them.
The males anchor themselves firmly to the surface to which they have crawled and use their legs to transmit vibrations from their bodies. The pattern of bursts of sound and characteristic frequency of vibration alert the females, who are interested in mating.
Due to the presence of a unique whitish area on the copulatory organ of the male spider, the name Stenaelurillus albus has been given to them. This discovery is unique because of the presence of mating plugs that have been reported in only 17 species of the approximate 5800 jumping spiders recorded till now.
