    R Gandhi appointed as new Deputy Governor of RBI

    Mr R Gandhi has been appointed by government as deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India. Earlier Mr Anand Sinha got retired in January 2014 from this post. Mr Gandhi will be serving on this post for three years. This is important current affair among current affairs april 2014 concerned with banking industry.

    He will look after the department of banking operations and development, department of non-banking supervision, urban banks department, department of expenditure and budgetary control, department of information technology, legal department etc.

    Mr R Gandhi has been working with RBI since 1980.

    Qatar based Doha Bank announced it's first branch in Mumbai

    Qatar based Doha Bank announced it's first branch in Mumbai next month. Doha bank is Qatar's largest private commercial bank. Doha bank has also proposed to expand its exposure to India from the current level of $1 billion to $5 billion over the next three years.

    Doha Bank already working in India with 41% stake and rest of other share is held by local people.As of now they are working in Kochi India as brokerage firms.Bank of Bahrain & Kuwait and Abu Dhabi Bank are some bank from the middle east who has already working in India.

    Doha Bank nets 17 percent of its business from overseas operations and is a major player in the remittances market.

    Ancient monastery, large mosaics, of Byzantine period found in Israel

    A monastery dating back some 1,400 years in the south of the Israel has been unveiled by Israel's Antiquities Authority. It has mosaic floors that shed light on life in the region during the Byzantine period.

    Colorful designs of flora, and animals along with inscriptions in Greek and Syriac are depicted in the designs. Names of the monastery's abbots are inscribed in the mosaics. Pottery and glass artefact and coins from the Byzantine period were also found at the site.The church is believed to have been a center for Christian worship at the time as monastery measured 35x30 meters and included four rooms, including a prayer room and a refectory. Each room had a different design.

    Indian power transmission line will be facilitated by Bangladesh for transit facility

    Bangladesh will provide transit facility for a 6000 megawatt Indian power transmission line. Joint steering committee meeting on India-Bangladesh power sector cooperation held on 3rd April 2014 has taken this decision. A committee will study the feasibility of transmitting power through Rangia Raota (Assam) to Borakpur (Bihar) via Boro Pukuria (Northwestern Dinajpur, Bangladesh).

    There was also an agreement on the proposal for establishing regional grid connectivity. This proposal plans to connect Bhutan, Nepal, India and Bangladesh via a new electricity network. In this regard a there will be a meeting  in New Delhi in May 2014.

    India's NTPC is constructing the plant at southwestern Rampal. 

    Satellite Sentinel-1A launched by Europe to monitor earth for climate change

    On 3rd April 2014 satellite Sentinel-1A was launched by European Space Agency (ESA) from Kourou, French Guiana. Six satellites will be built and launched under the 3.786-billion-euro ($5.19-billion) Copernicus project, a joint undertaking of ESA and the European Union (EU). 

    This satellite designed to monitor Earth for climate change and environmental damage and help disaster relief operations. Its prime objectives are Land and Ocean monitoring though potential applications go beyond stewardship of the environment. They could help shipping firms, farmers and construction companies, too. 

    Sentinel-1A will be followed by Sentinel-1B which will be launched by end of next year. 

    Suresh Arora appointed DGP of Punjab Police

    On 3rd April 2014 Election Commission of India (ECI) approved appointment of Suresh Arora as Directorate General of Police (DGP) of Punjab Police which is important among current affairs. Mr Suresh Arora is 1982 batch IPS officer and is currently working as director general of Vigilance Bureau. Earlier he has worked as ADGP Intelligence in Punjab Police.

    He was appointed in lieu of the post of DGP falling vacant due to incumbent DGP Sumedh Singh Saini going on 45 days leave. 

    World's most accurate clock NIST-F2 launched by NIST

    The US Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) launched a new atomic clock and named it as NIST-F2.

    This clock has been designed to serve the new US civilian time and frequency, along with the current NIST-F1 standard. 

    As per National Institute of Standards and Technology claim, NIST-F2 would neither gain nor lose a second in about 300 million years. So it make it three time more accurate than NIST-F1. 

    Important to note : 

    • NIST-F1 has served as standard since 1999.
    • Both NIST-F1 and NIST-F2 use a fountain of cesium atoms to determine the exact length of a second.
