Indian boxer Amit Panghal won gold in - Asian Games 2018
India's medal tally stood at its highest-ever at the end of the 14th Day of the 18th Asian Games at Jakarta, Indonesia with a total medal haul of 69 medals, including 15 gold, 24 silver and 30 bronze. The previous highest medal tally for India was in Guangzhou, China at the 2010 edition where they India finished sixth with 14 gold, 17 silver and 34 bronze.
The day started with boxer Amit Panghal stunning the reigning Olympic champion to bag gold.
Amit beat Hasanboy Dusmatov from Uzbekistan to finish at the top in the men's Light Fly of 49kg finals. This one is the first gold medal in boxing for India in this edition of the Asian Games. Bridge team comprising Pranab Bardhan and Shibhnath Sarkar won the 15th gold medal.The two golds were followed by a silver medal from the women's squash team, who lost 0-2 against Hong Kong and the men's hockey team, which won bronze medal in the match against Pakistan.
India, Pakistan agree to undertake Treaty mandated tours on both sides - Indus Waters Treaty
The 115th meeting of the India-Pakistan Permanent Indus Commission (PIC) was held in Lahore, Pakistan between 29th and 30th August 2018. The Indian Commissioner for Indus Waters led the Indian delegation.
Important Highlights
- During the meeting, technical discussions were held to implement various hydroelectric projects under the provisions of Indus Waters Treaty 1960 including Pakal Dul (1000 MW) and Lower Kalnai (48 MW) projects in J&K.
- Both the countries agreed to undertake the Treaty mandated tours of both the Indus Commissioners in Indus basin from both sides respectively.
- They deliberated to further strengthening the role of the Permanent Indus Commission for the matters under the Treaty.
- Both the sides have agreed to hold the next meeting of the Permanent Indus Commission in India on mutually convenient dates for now.
Vodafone-Idea merger completed on - 31st August 2018
The merger of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular completed on 31st August 2018,leading towards the creation of India's biggest telecom service provider with more than 408 million subscribers. After this, Aditya Birla Group led Idea Cellular has been renamed as the Vodafone Idea Limited. Both Vodafone and Idea brands will be continuing to operate.
