Who has received Golden Medal for Merit in Work of Spain - Tennis player Rafael Nadal

Among the important International Current Affairs, On 1st May 2015, Ace tennis player Rafael Nadal received the Golden Medal for Merit in Work of Spain. Golden Medal is one of the highest civilian honours of Spain which aims to highlight an exemplary performance in any job or profession.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy Brey presented the honour to Nadal at the PM’s official residence Moncloa Palace in Madrid.

Rafael Nadal is 14-time Grand Slam singles champion among which he has won the French Open for a record of nine times . Currently he is ranked as World Number 5 and is called The King of Clay.

Where will the World’s largest solar photovoltaic plant is to set up - Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh

Among the important National Current Affairs, In the last week of April 2015, The Madhya Pradesh Cabinet gave its approval to build 750 megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (SPV) plant at Gurh tehsil of Rewa district. The development of plant will take place in three phases of 250 MW.

Currently, the largest solar photovoltaic plant is the Topaz Solar Farm (550 MW) in California’s San Luis Obispo county in United States.

Characteristic Feature of SPV plant

• The plant will use photovoltaic (PV) technology to generate electricity from the sun and is estimated to be completed by March 2017 at an estimated cost of 4500 crore rupees.
• New and Renewable Energy Department of Madhya Pradesh government will provide land for the project whereas World Bank will provide the loan for the project.
• The plant will provide power at a price of 5.50 rupees per unit which is the benchmark for levelised tariff of SPV for 2015-16 announced by Central Electricity Regulatory Commission.
• The project is being set up under the scheme for development of solar parks and ultra mega solar power projects. .
• Transmission lines and Grid connections of the solar plant will be manufactured by the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited.
• Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company Limited will buy 40% of power.

Which airport is adjudged as the world’s best airport - Indira Gandhi International Airport

Among the important National Current Affairs, On 2nd May 2015, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has been adjudged as the world’s best airport for the year 2014. Airport Service Quality (ASQ) award has been presented to IGIA by Airports Council International (ACI) under the category of handling 25 to 40 million passengers per annum.

About Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA)

• Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) runs the IGIA, a joint venture between the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and GMR Group-led consortium which include Fraport and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad.
• The airport was developed under the public-private partnership (PPP) mode. The responsiility for DIAL was to design, build, finance, operate and maintain IGIA for a period of 30 years, along with an option to extend it for next 30 years.
• Currently, IGIA hosts 56 international carriers, 6 domestic carriers and also has the capacity to handle the gigantic aircrafts like Airbus A380.

Among the important Sports Current Affairs, On 3rd May 2015, American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. has won the World Welterweight title of World Boxing Association, World Boxing Organisation and World Boxing Council. He defeated Manny Pacquiao of Philippines with Judges Scores of 116-112, 116-112 and 118-110 in 12 rounds of intense boxing to win this title.

At iconic MGM Grand, Las Vegas, the legendary bout termed as ‘Fight of the Century’ was played. This fight was also the highest watched and most revenue generating with almost 400 million dollars of all time.
