Father of Malaysian hockey Sultan Azlan Shah passed away at 86
Sultan Azlan Shah passed away in Ipoh, Malaysia on 28 May 2014. He was 86 years old. He was best known as The Father of Malaysian hockey. Shah was the 34th ruler of the State of Perak. He was a former President of Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC).
Sultan Azlan Shah was a staunch lover of hockey, and this love for the game inspired him to start the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament in 1983. The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup began as a biennial event but became an annual event after 1998 and is hosted in the Perak capital of Ipoh.
Sultan Azlan Shah also became the Vice-President of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) in 1992 and stayed on for two terms.
30th May 2014 observed as Goa Day
On 30th May 2014, Goa observed Goa Day as this was the 27th Statehood Day. Goa became 25th State of the Indian Union on 30 May 1987.
Goa is a small state of India on the western coast.
Goa is a state that has been a major trade centre in Asia and has undergone continuous transformation, which has left a mark on various aspects of its cultural and socio-economic development.
International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers observed across the world
The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers was observed on Thursday, 29th May 2014. This marks the sixth year in a row the United Nations will honour more than 100 Blue Helmets who lost their lives the previous year while serving the cause of peace. This sombre milestone is a stark reminder of the risks incurred by individuals who put their lives on the line when they deploy to UN missions around the world.
The day celebrations include the honour of all peacekeepers who lost their lives while serving under the UN flag. Besides, the Dag Hammarskjold Medal is awarded posthumously to the peacekeepers who lost the lives while serving in the cause of peace, during the preceding year.
Nico Rosberg of Germany, Mercedes driver won Monaco Grand Prix of Formula One
On 25th May 2014, Nico Rosberg, Mercedes driver of Germany won Monaco Grand Prix of Formula One, which is among important Sports Current Affairs. This was his second victory of the season and fifth of his career.
The Mercedes, with this win, finished at first and second position for the fifth straight time and has swept all six races this season.
Rosberg finished 9.2 seconds ahead of Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain who came second. The third place was taken by Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo of Australia. Ferrari's Fernando Alonso of Spain finished at fourth.
Former Ecuadorian president Mahuad sentenced to 12 years jail
Jamil Mahuad, the former President of Ecuador was sentenced for 12 years in jail for embezzlement by a court of Ecuador. The court rule for the exiled ex-President come two-days after Interpol issued an international warrant for his arrest. Mr Mahuad fled to the United States in 2000 after a military coup, But the US has no extradition treaty with Ecuador.
He was accused of ordering banks to close for several days and freezing the accounts of ordinary citizens to protect the interests of bankers associated with him.
The decision, taken in March 1999, came during a serious economic crisis.
"The crime committed by the accused caused huge social turmoil," Judge Ximena Vintimilla said in her ruling.
"Its consequences are still being felt by Ecuadorean society to this day," she added.
Reliance to acquire control of Network18 for Rs 4,000 crore
On 29th May 2014, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) announced to buy a majority stake of about 78 percent in Network18 Media and Investments for 4000 crore rupees. The deal will be done through the Independent Media Trust (IMT) set up by Reliance. IMT will use the funds to acquire ownership of about 78 percent in Network18 and 9 percent in TV18.
The Reliance will make the tender offer to buy the remaining 21.96 percent in Network18 for 9.4 billion rupees while it will offer to buy up to 26 percent each in TV18 and Infomedia for a combined 17.4 billion rupees.
It is biggest ever deal in the Indian media sector.
In January 2012, Network18 Group and Reliance Industries had joined hands for a multi-layered deal, under which the RIL had sold part of its interest in ETV channels and got access to content and distribution assets of the electronic media group.
