    Union Government upgraded NIC-1987 to NIC-2008 to make it more investor friendly

    On 27th June 2014, Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry upgraded the National Industrial Classification -1987 (NIC-1987) to National Industrial Classification-2008 (NIC-2008). With immediate effect NIC-2008 will assist new businesses, being more investor friendly and internationally-attuned, as compared to the previous version of NIC Code.

    The NIC-2008 is an improved version over NIC-1987 which provides a more contemporary industrial classification system in the light of changes in the structure and composition of the economy, changing user requirements and compatibility with international standards.

    The National Industrial Classification (NIC) is an essential Statistical Standard for developing and maintaining comparable data base according to economic activities. Such classifications are frequently used in classifying the economically active population, statistics of industrial production and distribution, the different fields of labour statistics and other economic data such as national income.

    Indian sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik won prize at World Cup of Sand Sculpting-2014

     On 27th June 2014, Odisha sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has won a prize at the sand sculpting World Cup in the US. He won the People's Choice prize at the World Cup of Sand Sculpting - 2014 held in the Atlantic City of the US.  He won prize for his work "Save Tree, Save the Future".  This is first sand art world cup at USA 2014.

    The 37-year-old artist was the lone participant from India at the June 15-29 competition in Atlantic City which was attended by artists from several other countries. 

    Pattnaik also participated in doubles category with an American sculptor Mathew Roy Diebert. Both created sand sculpture of Tajmahal. They were placed at fifth position in the doubles category.

    Pattnaik has participated in over 50 International championships and festivals around the World and won many prizes. He is also known for creating sand sculptures on current issues and social awareness.

    Sudarsan Pattnaik was awarded with the Padmashri by Government of India in 2014.

    India has over 1 million children out of school: UNESCO

    India, Indonesia and Pakistan each have more than a million children out of school, according to a UN report which said the global number of unschooled children aged 6 to 11 is still as high as 58 million, showing little overall improvement since 2007.

    The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) report said that India had 1.4 million children out of school in 2011 but the country is among 17 other nations that have managed to reduce the number of out-of-school children in the past decade.

    Pakistan had 5.4 million children out of school in 2012 while the figure for Indonesia was 1.3 million.

    Jean-Claude Juncker named as the next president of the European Commission

     On 26th June 2014, former Luxembourg Prime Minister and veteran EU insider Jean-Claude Juncker was named as the next president of the European Commission.  He was backed by all EU member states, except Britain and Hungary.

    He will take his charge from November 2014. He will succeed Jose Manuel Barroso. The British Prime Minister David Cameroon called Juncker's nomination a bad day for Europe.

    He was the Prime Minister of Luxembourg from 1995 to 2013. He was also the first President of the Eurogroup from 2005 to 2013 and Luxembourg's Minister for Finances from 1989 to 2009.
