    International Day against Drug Abuse Illicit Trafficking on - 26th June 2019

    International Day against Drug Abuse Illicit Trafficking 2019 was celebrated on June 26th, 2019. This day is celebrated against drug abuse the illegal drug business. It is also known as World Drug Day. Celebrations of the day is an imperative initiative to tackle drug abuse trafficking.
    The theme of this day for 2019 is ‘Health for Justice, Justice for Health.’ This year&'s theme lime-

    Narendra Modi Government has designated senior IPS officer Samant Goel as the new RAW chief

    Kumar as the director of the Intelligence Bureau.

    Narendra Modi comprising Home Minister Amit Shah.

    • Samant Goel is a 1984 batch IPS officer of Punjab cadre who will succeed Anil Dhasmana.
      Arvind Kumar is a 1984 batch IPS officer, will head the IB, the main internal intelligence unit of the
      government. 
    • Arvind Kumar will replace Rajiv Jain, who finish an extended tenure as the Intelligence Bureau
      chief. 
    • Both Goel Kumar have a strong intelligence background, with Goel 1st having worked in
      Research Analysis Wing in 2001 Kumar having been with Intelligence Bureau since 1991.

    Council of Europe restores Voting Rights of Russia by - Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe

    Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe at Strasbourg, France, has voted for the
    restoring Russia’s voting rights, five years after they were withdrawn over its illegitimate
    annexation of Crimean Peninsula.

    • In 2014 following Russia’s annexation of Crimea, Russia was exposed of its voting rights. Russia
      then replied by prohibiting assembly since 2017 the nation also refused to pay its share of 33
      million Euro to human rights regulator.
    • Freshly, Russia had also threatened the assembly of vacating the body altogether if it is not
      allowed to participate in election of a new secretary general to body.
    • The Parliamentary assembly voted with 118 in favour 62 against, 10 nonparticipation. The
      voting was undertaken notwithstanding strong opposition from Ukraine.
    • This initiative now forms the way for Russia to take part in election of a new secretary general for
      pan-European rights body.

    Universal Smart Card Driving License launched by - Government

    Union Ministry of Road Transport Highways has finalised to amend the format of driving licenses
    to smart card type driving licences so as to trail a standardised format countrywide.
    Key Highlights

    • Nitin Gadkari, Road Transport Highways Minister in a written statement in Rajya Sabha,
      informed that Union Ministry of Road Transport Highways has given a common standard format
      &  design of Driving Licence for Pan India.
    • About 30 per cent of Indians drive with fake/bogus licenses. Police reports, in just of Delhi National
      Capital Region proposes that, cases of underage driving have increased to 58.9 percent in 1st
      15 days of January 2019, 61 non-allowed juvenile cases were recorded issued with challans.
    • A report from Nissan India road safety NGO SaveLIFE Foundation lime-lighted worrying part of
      underage driving. Thus, ministry’s initiative to this new format is believed to benefit control this
      situation to some extent.
    • Union Ministry of Road Transport Highways pursues to amend present format of driving licenses
      to laminated card without chip/smart card type driving licences which will comprise countrywide
      standardised format of placement of data, standardization of fonts etc.
    • For this, Regional Transport Offices should release a uniform format of driving licenses across
      nation using a universal smart card driving license format.
