    France to honour Shah Rukh Khan with "Legion of France"

    On 25th June 2014, France announced to honour Shahrukh Khan with the "Legion of France", one of its highest civilian awards. It will be awarded to Shahrukh for his contribution to Cinema.

    He will be honoured with Legion of Honour during the visit of French foreign minister Laurent Fabius to India on 30 June 2014. 

    Amitabh Bachchan received the Legion of Honour in 2007.

    French foreign minister Laurent Fabius is scheduled to arrive in New Delhi on June 29 to meet External Affairs Minister (EAM) Sushma Swaraj.

    35th National Games to be held in Kerala from 31 January 2015

    On 26th June 2014, dates for 35th edition of National games were announced at the Member's Lounge of the Kerala Legislative Assembly complex, Thiruvananthapuram by Indian Olympic Association (IOA). It was decided that the games will be held at 32 different venues across seven districts of Kerala from 31 January to 14 February 2015.

    The 35th National Games will be held in 36 disciplines and will see a total of 11641 participants that includes 7744 athletes. The participants will compete for a total of 365 gold and silver medals as well as 477 bronze medals.

    Present on the occasion was Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Union Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs Sarbananda Sonowal, Leader of Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan, senior BJP leader O. Rajagopal and numerous senior party leaders cutting across political lines.

    "We are thankful to the Centre for extending all the support and we are excited in hosting what would be one of the biggest sporting events," said Chandy.

    15 killed as GAIL pipeline bursts in Andhra Pradesh

    On 27th June 2014, 15 people were killed and 20 injured in a blast in Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) pipeline at Nagaram Village in Andhra Pradesh. 

    The fire on the 18-inch pipeline, which feeds gas to Lanco's Kondapalli power plant near Vijaywada, was extinguished by mid-morning. The blaze occurred barely a few hundred metres from ONGC's Tatipaka Refinery located at the village. 

    Two weeks ago, six people were killed by a poisonous gas leak in Chhattisgarh's Bhilai Steel Plant.  

    Union Government delicensed manufacturing of defence items

    On 26th June 2014, Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry delicensed manufacturing of defence items. Almost 55 percent of the defence items have been removed from the compulsory licensing list. 

    As per the Press Note there is now a smaller negative list of defence items in which compulsory licensing is still required. These include items such as tanks, vehicles fitted with military mountings of arms and ammunition or with equipment for mine laying, defence aircraft, including helicopters, UAVs and warships.

    With this decision, private companies like Tata, Mahindra and Larsen & Toubro will no longer require a license to manufacture components, castings and sub-assembly. 

    After "Amma" canteen, Tamil Nadu government launched Amma pharmacies to provide low cost medicines

    On 26th June 2014, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Jayalalitha launched Amma Pharmacy (Amma Marundhagam) to sell quality medicines at a lower prices. These pharmacies will enable people to avail medicines at a low price as the medicines will be sold at a discount of 10 percent to the maximum retail price.

    100 outlets of Amma Pharmacies will be opened across the state today; 20 of these will be in Chennai. They will be selling medicines at affordable prices with just 4 per cent profit against the usual 14 per cent margin.  

    The state government has allocated an amount of Rs. 20 crore to the state cooperative society to finance these medicine stores, spending Rs. 20 lakh for every air-conditioned outlet. 

    The districts where the pharmacy were launched by the Chief Minister through a video-conferencing from the secretariat are Chennai, Erode, Salem, Cuddalore, Madurai, Sivaganga and Virudhunagar.

    International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observed on 26th June

    On 26th June 2014,  International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed across the globe. 

    The theme of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2014 is A message of hope: Drug use disorders are preventable and treatable.

    The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on this day launched campaigns to raise awareness about the global drug problem. United Nations on 7 December 1987, by resolution 42/112 of the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
