International day of Remembrance of the victims of Transatlantic Slave Trade 2018 observed globally on - 25th March
On 25th March 2018, International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade was observed across the globe. This day was approved by UN General Assembly by a resolution on 17th December 2007. It highlights the challenges faced by people towards freedom and equality.
Important to mention here that transatlantic slave trade was the largest forced migration in history. Almost 96 percent of enslaved Africans arrived in cramped ships at ports in South America and the Caribbean Islands.
There were more than 15 Million men, women and children became victim of this.
Global carbon emissions hit record high in 2017 - IEA Report
Internation Energy Agency ( IEA ) has revealed that in 2017 global energy related carbon emissions were highest. It was 32.5 gigatons. It shows the slow energy efficiency improvements and higher energy demands.
Global energy demand in 2017 was rose by 2.1 percent which is more than twice if we compare to previous year. As in 2016 it rose by 0.9 percent.
Important to mention here that Carbon dioxide emissions are the main cause of increase of Global average temperature. It is also a matter of concern as it is affecting the global climate too.
In we talk about Asia alone then it accounted for two thirds of global increase in emissions. China alone rose by 1.7 percent.In Few Nations like Britain, United States, Mexico and Japan there was a decline of carbon emissions.
Name of the player who was banned for one Test for ball tampering - Steve Smith ( Australia )
Steve Smith of Australia cricket team was banned for one match and fined for match fee. ICC took this decision after he was found guilty in ball tempering during a match with South Africa.
Cameron Bancroft was instructed by Smith to tamper with ball. Cameron Bancroft who actually tampered with Ball was also fined 75% of match fee and was also issued three demerit points. After this incident Smith and Warner also step down as Captain and Vice captain respectively.
Who has been nominated for Representative to UNESCO Executive Board from India - JS Rajput
On 25th March, 2018 India nominated Professor JS Rajput as representative to UNESCO from India. Professor JS Rajput is former director of NCERT.
Important to mention here that India won elections for the members of Executive Board which took place on 8th November 2017. UNESCO Executive Board has four year term so this term will be from 2017 to 2021. Headquarters of UNESCO are in Paris. Total seats of Executive Board of UNESCO are 58. Main work of this board is to examine the work and budget of various schemes of this organization.

Name of Canadian Mathematician who won 2018 Abel Prize for his Grand Unified Theory - Robert Langlands
On 20th March 2018, Canadian mathematician Robert Langlands was awarded with Abel Prize 2018. He was awarded with this prestigious award for this 'Grand Unified Theory of Maths'. He will receive this prize from King Harald V of Norway on 22nd May 2018.
Robert Langlands was born in Canada in 1936. He did this graduation from University of British Columbia in 1957. He did his MSc and PhD from Yale University of the US. Presently he is teaching at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton in United States.
Abel Prize
- Abel Prize has been named after Norwegian mathematician Niels Hendrik Abel.
- First Abel Prize was given in 2003.
- This prize carries a prize money of $776000.
Longest sandstone cave of world discovered in - Meghalaya
Longest sandstone cave named Krem Puri was discovered in Meghalaya. It was found near Laitsohum village in Mawsynram area in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. Total length of Krem Puri cave is 24,583 metres.
Till now longest cave was 'Cueva Del Saman' in Edo Zulia, Venezuela. Length of this cave is 18,200 metres.
Actual length of Krem Puri cave was measured during the expedition by the Meghalaya Adventurers’ Association (MAA). This expedition was done from February 5 to 1st March 2018 with aim to measure and map the cave.
