World Book and Copyright Day 2019 celebrated on - 23rd April 2019
The World Book and Copyright Day was celebrated worldwide on April 23rd, 2019 to highlight the power of books and to promote United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s dream of knowledge societies that are inclusive, pluralistic, equitable, open and participatory for all residents.
The 24th edition of World Book Day will celebrate literature and reading while posing emphasis on the
significance of enhancing and protecting Indigenous languages.
The Day pays acknowledgement to books and authors by inspiring everyone to determine the pleasure of reading.
World Book Capital for 2019: Sharjah, UAE
Every year, the UNESCO along with the international groups representing publishers, booksellers and
libraries, nominate the World Book Capital for the period of 1 year with effect from 23rd April each year.
This year, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization selected Sharjah as the World Book Capital for 2019. With the motto ‘Read - you are in Sharjah’, the program focuses on 6 themes including Inclusivity, Reading, Heritage, Outreach, Publishing and Children.
The motive behind designating Sharjah as Book Capital is to boost a culture of reading in the UAE and launch new initiatives to fulfil the challenge of literary creation in the remaining the Arab world.Supreme Court issues contempt notice against Rahul Gandhi on - 23rd April 2019
The Supreme Court on April 23rd, 2019 released a contempt notice to Congress President Rahul Gandhi for his comments on the Rafale judgment, which the apex court had informed were ‘incorrectly attributed’ to it.
The Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi informed that it will hear the criminal
contempt petition filed by BJP Member of Parliament Meenakshi Lekhi against Gandhi on April 30th along with the pending review petition against the December 14th verdict in the Rafale jet deal case.
Important Highlights- The SC had issued notice in the contempt petition filed against Rahul Gandhi for attributing ‘chowkidar chor hai’ remarks to the Supreme Court.
- The top court refused the appeal of Gandhi to close the criminal contempt petition filed by Lekhi.
Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, seeming for the contempt petitioner submitted that Rahul Gandhi had not presented any apology for the remark. - In reply, Senior Advocate A.M.Singhvi, appearing on behalf of Gandhi, explained that the Congress
President had articulated regret for wrongfully mixing-up Chowkidar remarks along with his comments on Supreme Court verdict in Rafale review. - Singhvi also submitted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had misreported the judgment to state that the Court had given clean chit to him in Rafale corruption contentions.
Actor Sunny Deol joins BJP on - 23rd April 2019
Actor Sunny Deol joined the BJP on April 23rd, 2019 at the party HQ in New Delhi. He joined the party in the attendance of Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Piyush Goyal.
The 62 years old Sunny Deol is the latest from the film society to join the political brigade. Talking on his
political debut, the actor informed that he was encouraged by PM Narendra Modi and took the political plunge as he wanted to make a difference in public life and would rather have his work speak for himself.Important Details
- As per to reports, the Bharatiya Janata Party is planning to influence actor Sunny Deol to contest from Gurdaspur in Punjab, a seat that was earlier represented by late actor Vinod Khanna. Deol has a vast fan following in Punjab.
- Deol’s father Dharmendra was previously a Bharatiya Janata Party Member of Parliament from Bikaner in Rajasthan. On the other hand, his stepmother, actress and politician Hema Malini, is presently challenging to retain her Mathura seat in UP.
- Vinod Khanna decreased in April 2017. Later on, the seat passed to Congress's Sunil Kumar Jakhar after the byelection. Congress has launched Sunil Kumar Jakhar again from this constituency.
- For the 2019 Lok Sabha election, the Bharatiya Janata Party has formed an association with SAD in
Punjab. Under the contract, the Bharatiya Janata Party is contesting 3 of the 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab.
