    Veteran Tamil film director and producer Ramanarayanan passed away at the age of 65

     On 22nd June 2014, Veteran Tamil film director and producer Ramanarayanan passed away at the age of 65 in Singapore. He has directed 125 films and holds the world record of directing the maximum number of movies by a director.

    Ramanarayanan started his career as a dialogue-writer in Tamil film industry and later he turned into producer and director and produced his first film Meenakshi Kungumam in 1977 and directed his first film Sumai in 1981. Some of hit films are Kanne Radha, Soorakottai Singakutty, Veeran and Sahadevan Mahadevan. 

    His 125th film was Arya Surya.

    Apart from his movie carrier, he was also elected as MLA from the Karaikudi constituency in 1989.

    He made films in nine languages such as Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Bhojpuri, Bengali, Oriya and Malay.

    World Refugee Day observed on 20th June across the globe

    On 20th June World Refugee Day (WRD) was observed across the globe. It raises awareness about the plight of refugees in various countries. In 2000 United Nations General Assembly decided that from 2001, World Refugee Day will be observed on 20 June globally. 

    In his message on the occasion of World Refugee Day UN chief, Ban Ki-moon said, "Finding durable solutions for the displaced will require more solidarity and burden-sharing by the international community.  On World Refugee Day, I call on the international community to intensify efforts to prevent and resolve conflicts, and to help achieve peace and security so that families can be reunited and refugees can return home."

    As per the UN Refugee Agency's (UNHCR) annual Global Trends report, the number of refugees including internally displaced and asylum-seekers across the world has for the first time crossed 50 million in 2013 which is the highest since the World War II. 

    Myanmar's first site Ancient Pyu Cities, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List

    Among the international Current Affairs, On 22nd June 2014, Myanmar's first site, Ancient Pyu Cities was inscribed on the UNESCO's World Heritage Site List. 

    The Ancient Pyu Cities include three cities Halin, Beikthano and Sri Ksetra. The decision to include Myanmar's first site on World Heritage list was taken at the 38th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Doha, Qatar. Three cities Halin, Beikthano and Sri Ksetra are located in Burma's central Dry Zone and featured the walled remains of sites built by the Pyu dynasty. The Pyu Kingdoms flourished for over 1000 years between 200 B.C and 900 A.D.

     

    Apart from this, Shahr-i Sokhta of Iran was also inscribed on the UNESCO's World Heritage Site List. Shahr-i Sokhta menas "Burnt City". It is located at the junction of Bronze Age trade routes crossing the Iranian plateau. The remains of the mud brick city represent the emergence of the first complex societies in eastern Iran. Founded around 3200 BC, it was populated during four main periods up to 1800 BC, during which time there developed several distinct areas within the city.
