    Harshit Saumitra became youngest to reach Everest Base Camp at the age of 5 years

    On 19th October 2014, Harshit Saumitra made a record to become the youngest person to reach the Everest Base Camp (EBC). Harshit Saumitra made this record when he is just five years old. He broke the record of Aaryan Balaji who was seven years old when he did same job.

    Harshit Saumitra is son of Rajeev Saumitra who is a mountaineer and had also reached the peak of Mount Everest in 2013.

    Union cabinet gave its nod to Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project

     On 18th October 2014, Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-1. Estimated cost of this project is 10773 crore rupees and it will be covering a distance of 35.96 km, which includes two corridors viz. North-South Corridor covering 15.42 km from APMC to Motera Stadium and East-West Corridor covering 20.54 km from Thaltej Gam to Vastral Gam.

    Inter-governmental MoU to upgrade Chabahar port of Iran was approved by Union Cabinet

    On 18th October 2014, Union Cabinet approved an inter-governmental MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with Iran. This is related to upgradation of Chabahar port Phase-I. 

    Under this Project India will set up a Joint Venture (JV) Company with an investment of 85.21 million US dollar and operate the port for 10 years, through a leasing agreement.

    Chabahar port is located in the Sistan-Baluchistan Province on south-eastern coast of Iran, which lies outside the Persian Gulf and it is easily accessed from western coast of India.

    Indonesia got its new President as Joko Widodo

    Among the Important International Current Affairs, On 20th October 2014, Joko Widodo Sworn in as New President of Indonesia. Earlier he emerged as winner with 53 percent votes. He defeated former general Prabowo Subianto. Joko Widodo was elected as the governor of Jakarta in 2012, which made him a contender for presidency.

    Joko Widodo replaced Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Bambang Yudhoyono had stepped down after serving a maximum of 10 years.

    Indian-American Vanita Gupta appointed as Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General in DoJ of US

    On 15th October 2014, an Indian-American attorney Vanita Gupta was appointed as temporary head of Department of Justice's civil rights division (DoJ) as she was nominated by US President Barack Obama. From 20th October 2014 she took the charge of the office, as Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General and Acting Assistant Attorney General at the DoJ. 

    Earlier Molly Moran was serving at same post. Vanita Gupta was serving as the Deputy Legal Director at the American Civil Liberties Union before.
