Stanislas Wawrinka beats Roger Federer to clinch Monte Carlo Masters title
On 20th April 2014, Stanislas Wawrinka won men's single Monte Carlo Masters Tennis title by defeating former world number one Roger Federer. 29 years old Stanislas Wawrinka won his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title.
Doubles trophy was won by America's Bryan brothers, Bob and Mike.
India's First Double-decker Flyover Opens in Mumbai
Finally India got its first double-decker flyover which was opened for public use on 18th April 2014 in Mumbai. This flyover in Mumbai will provide a critical east-west suburban link in the city and has slashed travel time from the earlier 90 minutes to barely 20 minutes. This project is named as Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR).
The flyover spanned a total length of 3.45 km and another 1.8 km long double-decker flyover crossed above the Central Railway and Harbour Line tracks. The flyover will give a speedy access from the Western Express Highway to Kurla, Tilak Nagar, Chembur and Eastern Express Highway.
SCLR project has been funded by World Bank.
The Santacruz-Chembur Link Road took a cost of around 4.54 billion rupees.
Ravi Shastri among three-member panel to be proposed by BCCI to Supreme Court for IPL scam probe
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on 20th April 2014 chose names of the panelists to be a part of a three member panel to probe into allegations of betting and spot fixing during the sixth edition of IPL. The three member panel will comprise :
- Jai Narayan Patel (Former Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court),
- R K Raghavan (The former Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation),
- Ravi Shastri (The former India captain-turned-commentator).
Committee was constituted after emergent working committee meeting at Mumbai headquarters. Supreme Court ordered this to ensure fair probe into the IPL scam.
Important to note :
The BCCI will propose these names to the Supreme Court of India on 22nd April 2014 and the final decision will be made by the apex court that who will investigate the matter fairly.
Country Singer Kevin Sharp passed away at 43
Country musician and a survivor of cancer Kevin Sharp passed away at the age of 43 on 19th April 2014. He died in California due to complications in past stomach surgeries and digestive issues.
Kevin Sharp was a very polular singer, in 2004 he also wrote a book about fighting cancer entitled Tragedy's Gift.
He was a singer, who topped the charts through his songs in mid 90’s.
Few of his popular albums were Nobody Knows, Measure of a Man, Love Is and Make A Wish.
HDFC Bank's blood donation drive sets Guinness World Record in a single day
Annual blood donation drive organized by the bank in December 2013 has been recorded as the largest effort of this kind which involved 61,902 participants and was achieved by HDFC Bank with 1,115 blood donation camps held across 709 locations in India. This was held on 6 December 2013.
With this HDFC became the first corporate firm to hold such recognition.
Shaik Abdul Hameed won the 2014 Thailand Tour title of Asian Bowling Federation
Shaik Abdul Hameed became India's first ever title winner at the Asian-level as he captured the Asian Bowling Federation's Thailand tour event. Shaik Abdul Hameed defeated Mahmood Al Attar of UAE in the final.
Shaik Abdul Hameed had won India’s first-ever medal in Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championship in 2002.
In the Women's Final, Kritsanakorn Sangaroon of Thailand won the Thailand Tour title of Asian Bowling Federation
Joshna Chinappa win Richmond Open title by defeating World No. 1
India's Joshna Chinappa defeated Australia's former world champion Rachael Grinham by 11-9, 11-5, 11-8 in straight games to win the inaugural USD 10,000 Richmond Open. Joshna Chinappa currently holds 21st rank.
