Arvind Subramanian appointed Chief Economic Adviser to Govt
Among the Major Appointments Current Affairs on 16th October 2014, US-based economist Arvind Subramanian was appointed as Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) in the Union Finance Ministry. He will be serving at this post for three years.
Arvind Subramanian, who is alumnus of St Stephens College, Delhi and IIM Ahmedabad is an expert of the economics of India, China and changing balance of global economic power and his is academic work has focused on trade and its effect on developing countries.
Deendayal Upadhyay Shramev Jayate Karyakram launched by Govt
On 16th October 2014, Deendayal Upadhyay Shramev Jayate Karyakram was launched by Union government with an aim to create a conductive environment for industrial development and doing business with ease. Besides, it will also herald towards good governance, welfare and skill development of labour sector.
It was launched at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
World Food Prize 2014 was bagged by Indian-born scientist Sanjaya Rajaram
On 16th October 2014, Eminent Indian scientist Dr Sanjaya Rajaram received the World Food Prize 2014 for his scientific research. He was awarded this prize for his scientific research that led to a prodigious increase in world wheat production by more than 200 million tons building upon the successes of the Green Revolution.
Dr Rajaram has helped secure a 1.3 percent rise in global wheat production per annum during the last four decades.
Angola, Malaysia, New Zealand, Spain and Venezuela elected as non-permanent members of UNSC
On 16th October 2014, Venezuela, Angola, Malaysia, New Zealand and Spain were elected as non-permanent members of United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
Appointment of new members of the Security Council will be effective from 1st January 2015 for the period of two years.
ACC approved appointment of Rajiv Mehrishi as the Union Finance Secretary
On 16th October 2014, The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) appointed Rajiv Mehrishi as the Union Finance Secretary in Department of Economic Affairs of the Union Ministry of Finance.
Rajiv Mehrishi is an IAS of the 1978-batch of Rajasthan Cadre. Rajiv Mehrishi succeeded Arvind Mayaram, as Arvind Mayaram was appointed as the Union Tourism Secretary.
Earlier Rajiv Mehrishi was serving as Chief Secretary of Rajasthan.
