    Juan Manuel Santos re-elected as President of Colombia

     On 15th June 2014,  of Social National Party was re-elected as the President of Colombia. He won the Presidential election with 51 percent of votes against Right Wing candidate, Oscar Ivan Zuluaga with 45 percent of polled votes.

    He will take charge as the President for the second term in August 2014. Juan Manuel Santos said, "This is the end of more than 50 years of violence in our country and it is the beginning of a Colombia with more justice and social inclusion".

    Indian-origin physicist honoured by Queen Elizabeth II

    Indian-origin physicist, Professor Tejinder Virdee, best known for his work on the Large Hadron Collider, was accorded an honorary knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II for his contribution to the field of science. He was honoured with this award on 14th June 2014.

    Virdee of Imperial College London was named a Knight Bachelor for his services to science in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

    He has delivered seminal results in particle physics, including the groundbreaking discovery of the Higgs Boson, or the God particle, a particle that gives mass to other particles.

    Beyond his innovative work in particle physics, he is also a great campaigner for science, and promoter of science and education in Africa and India.

    Former India left-arm spinner Murali Kartik announced his retirement from all forms of cricket

     On 14th June 2014, Former Indian left-arm spinner Murali Kartik has announced his retirement from all formats of cricket with immediate effect. 37 years old Murali Kartik has represented India in 8 Tests, 37 One Internationals and one T20. 

    Kartik said, "I have decided to hang up my boots from all forms of competitive cricket but will honour my commitments for Kings XI Punjab during this year's Champions League T20. I want to thank everyone for their support and felt that it is the right time to go. I have enjoyed playing this game and it has given me a lot".

    In his IPL career he had also represented Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore and the now defunct Pune Warriors. 

    1980 Batch IAS, Shaktikanta Das appointed as Revenue Secretary

    On 14th June 2014, Mr. Shaktikanta Das was appointed as the new Revenue Secretary. He is a 1980 batch IAS officer of Tamilnadu cadre. He will succeed Rajiv Takru.

    Shaktikanta Das is currently working as Fertilizer Secretary. He will take his charge on 17 June 2014. 

    The appointment was approved by Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rajiv Takru was appointed as Secretary to the Department of North Eastern Region (DONER).

    Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi visited Bhutan

    Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi was on 2 day official visit to Bhutan on 15 June 2014 - 16 June 2014. He made his first foreign tour to Bhutan.

    He was accompanied by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh. A grand welcome was accorded by Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.

    India is the largest trading partner of Bhutan. The volume of the trade is over 6800 crore rupees and around 90 per cent of its foreign trade is with India.

    He also addressed the joint session of the Parliament of Bhutan and also inaugurated one of India's assistance projects – the building of the Supreme Court of Bhutan.
