Name the veteran fantasy author who has passed away - Sir Terence David John Pratchett
Among the important National Current Affairs, On 12th March 2015, Renowned fantasy author Sir Terence David John Pratchett (Terry Pratchett) passed away in London, United Kingdom at the age of 66.
Sir Terry Pratchett was famously known as the creator of the Discworld series of more than 40 interconnected novels. In 1983, his first Discworld novel The Colour of Magic was published. He has sold more than 85 million books worldwide in 37 languages.
About Sir Terry Pratchett
- Terry Pratchett had written more than 70 books which were translated in 37 languages.
- In 1983, his first Discworld novel The Colour of Magic was published and his debut novel The Carpet People was published in 1971.
- He was knighted by the Queen Elizabeth II in 2009 for his services to literature and was appointed as officer of Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1998.
- In 2010, Terry Pratchett was awarded the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement.
Mumbai HC instructed Maharashtra Government to set up a - redressal mechanism against noise pollution
Among the important National Current Affairs, On 12th March 2015, The Mumbai High Court (HC) directed the Maharashtra government to set up a redressal mechanism for complaints filed by citizens against noise pollution levels. The direction given by the Mumbai HC is the latest in the series of rules and judgments pertaining to noise pollution given by various courts and the Union Government respectively.
It also directed the state government to frame a policy in this regard within two months and submit a compliance report by 6th June 2015. Further it instructed the state government to take prompt action before the festivals get over.
The court further said that organizers of the religious festivals do not have the right to take away the fundamental right of citizen to silence and to live in comfort and peace. Right to live peacefully is expressed in the Article 21 of the Constitution of India.
Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by Mahesh Bedekar on which the direction were given by the division bench of Justices AS Oka and AS Gadkari while hearing. He argued about the nuisance created by organisers of festivals through the noise pollution in the PIL.
Global emissions of CO2 from energy sector stalled for the first time in 40 years in 2014 - IEA
On 13th March 2015, International Energy Agency (IEA) released the data on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. According to it, the global emissions of CO2 from energy sector stalled in the year 2014.
As per the preliminary data released, global emissions of CO2 stood at 32.3 billion tonnes in 2014 which is same as in the year 2013. Further the data suggests that efforts to mitigate climate change may be having a more pronounced effect on emissions than had previously been thought.
According to IEA, the cause for the halt of CO2 emissions is the changing patterns of energy consumption in China and Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries.
