2014 FIFA Football World Cup clinched by Germany
On 13th July 2014, Germany defeated Argentina by 1-0 in 2014 FIFA World Cup Final to become Champion. The final match was held at Maracana in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Mario Gotze scored winning goal during the extra-time.

Veteran VHP leader Giriraj Kishore dies at 94
On 13th July 2014, Senior Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Giriraj Kishore passed away. He was 94 years old. Wheelchair-bound Giriraj was suffering from prostrate cancer for some years, senior VHP functionary Rajinder Pankaj said.
Giriraj Kishore, an Indian activist and politician was actively associated with the Ram temple agitation (Ram Janmabhoomi Andolan). He joined the RSS at an early age, which sent him to VHP. He joined VHP in 1983 during the first Bharat Mata Yatra. He was born on 4 February 1920 in Etah of Uttar Pradesh.
Bring wages under MGNREGS on par with minimum wages : SC
On 11th July 2014, A bench of justices SJ Mukhopadhaya and SA Bobde directed the Centre that wage under the scheme cannot be less than the minimum wage fixed by the state government for agricultural labourers. The Centre submitted that it has already issued notification in this regard to bring the wage on par with minimum wage fixed by the state government.
Senior advocate VK Biju, appearing for a labour union on whose plea the high court had passed the direction had strongly opposed the Centre's contention justifying differential wages.
The wage rate under the central job scheme, which varied between Rs 118 and Rs 181 from state to state, was less than the notified minimum daily pay in six states. But in 14 states the wages under rural job scheme was higher than the minimum wage.
Warship INS Kuthar damaged in mishap
On 13th July 2014, Indian Naval Ship (INS) Kuthar Warship was damaged in a mishap. It is the 15th reported mishap involving naval personnel and assets after the sinking of the Russian-origin submarine INS Sindhurakshak in August 2013. The Indian Navy ordered a Board of Inquiry to probe the incident. The latest mishap occurred at a time when the warship was returning after operating in rough weather.
The warship INS Kuthar is understood to be part of the fleet of the Vishakhapatnam-based Eastern Naval Command, which is in-charge of operations in Bay of Bengal and areas beyond it.
Sim Bhullar became first Indian-origin player to join NBA
Sim Bhullar has become the first player of Indian origin to be a part of the National Basketball Association (NBA) after he signed a summer contract with the Sacramento Kings, a professional basketball team in the US.
21-year-old Bhullar, who is 7.5 feet tall and weighs 360 pounds, is a centre from New Mexico State University. Originally from Canada, Bhullar's parents hail from Punjab, India.
Since taking over the reins of the Kings, which was lying low in recent years due to less winning percentages and declining ticket sales, Ranadive has transformed the organisation into one of the better ones in the league.
Indian Railway Revenue Earnings up by 9.48 Per Cent during April - June 2014
The total approximate earnings of Indian Railways on originating basis during 1st April 2014 to 30th June 2014 were Rs. 36674.17 crore compared to Rs. 33499.53 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 9.48 per cent.
The total approximate earnings from goods during 1st April 2014 – 30th June 2014 were Rs. 24850.37 core compared to Rs. 23214.60 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 7.05 per cent.
The total approximate revenue earnings from passengers during 1st April 2014 – 30th June 2014 were Rs. 10153.68 crore compared to Rs. 8724.65 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 16.38 percent.
INS Kamorta handed over to Navy
On 12th July 2014, India's first indigenous anti-submarine warship (ASW) Indian Naval Ship (INS) Kamorta was handed over to the Indian Navy by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata.
"The super-sophisticated frontline warship was formally handed over by GRSE Chairman and Managing Director, Rear Admiral (Retd) A.K. Verma, VSM to the Commanding Officer of the ship Cdr. Manoj Jha at a brief ceremony," a GRSE release said.
According to the GRSE , the significance of the warship is that it is the "first Indian Naval warship ever built in the country with almost 90 per cent of indigenous content."
The ship would be commissioned in August 2014 at Visakhapatnam and would form part of the Eastern Fleet under the Eastern Naval Command.
