    5000 Wi-Fi Choupals in villages launched by - Union Government

    On June 11th, 2018, the Union Government has launched 5,000 Wi-Fi Choupals in villages and delivery of rail tickets through CSCs ( Common Service Centres ). Union Electronics and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and Railway Minister Piyush Goyal  inaugurated the service in New Delhi. Government has started this service with the aim to transfer the rural connectivity through Bharatnet by providing 60 thousand wifi hotspots initially.

    Important Highlights

    • The WiFi Choupals will be enabling people in rural areas with an effective internet access for their various digital processes.
    • The target is to have Wi-Fi choupals in all 2.5 lakh gram panchayats by offering  them the last-mile connectivity.
    • This scheme has been added along with the optical fibre network under BharatNet, which is connecting 2.5 lakh gram panchayats through broadband.
    • So far, 7-8 villages have been connected digitally  with this set of WiFi hotspots.

    India’s first national police museum to come up in Delhi on - 21st October 2018

    The Union Government has finalised to start India’s 1st national police museum in Lutyens' Delhi.
    The museum will showcase the history, articles and gear of central and state police forces and it will be
    formed in the national police memorial’s underground buildings in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi.
    The museum is anticipated to be initiated on October 21st, on the eve of Police Commemoration Day, by either PM Narendra Modi or Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
    Key Highlights

    • The CAPFs, the CPOs and the State Police Forces have been asked to gather their historical papers, items, police associated gazette announcements and unique weapons and uniforms for displaying at the museum.
    • The items sought to be displayed at National Police Museum will consist of brass insignia, ceremonial and operational head-gears and dresses, belts, dog squad photographs and old copies of the Indian Police Act.
    • Few other items will be women in police department, mahila masses, the much older and basic police communication and wireless apparatus, flying squads and police souvenirs.
    • An enthusiastic police staff will be positioned at the museum to undertake audio-visual excursions.

    Arvind Saxena appointed as acting UPSC Chairman on - 20th June 2018

    Arvind Saxena has been selected to work as the acting Chairman of the UPSC from June 20 th , 2018.
    The declaration was done via a government order, which informs that Arvind Saxena will complete the
    duties of the position of UPSC Chairman, with effect from June 20 th till further orders/completion of his tenure on August 7 th , 2020.
    Arvind Saxena, would be succeeding compulsory Vinay Mittal who finishes his term on June 19 th .

    • Arvind Saxena is a 1978 batched Indian Postal Service officer. He served as Divisional Head of Postal Services at Bharatpur and Kota in Rajasthan.

    NGT directs hill states to file report on - Forest fires

    The National Green Tribunal has instructed the hill states to file a statement on the steps attained by them to control recurring forest fires. The bench led by acting National Green Tribunal Chairperson Jawad Rahim impleaded the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the states of Arunachal Pradesh, HP, Nagaland, Sikkim, J&K and West Bengal in the case.

    • The green tribunal showcased notices to the hill states and questioned them to file an affidavit affirming measures taken by them in regard to National Action Plan to crisscross forest fires. The process has to be perform within 2 weeks.
    • The issue is now listed for next hearing on July 30th .

    • The tribunal was hearing an appeal by NGO Friends that had supposed that timber mafia, villagers and officials were supposed to be cause for fire incidents and degradation of the environment.
    • In its appeal, the NGO had sought an investigation by the judicial authority into the reasons behind the fire occurrences.
    • It also required a restriction on the practice of burning wood for road work.
    • The appeal proclaimed that above ‘1,300 cases of forest blaze have taken place in the current season and above 2,600 hectares of forest area has been ruined’ in the state.

     Rail Madad app to expedite and streamline passenger grievance redressal launched by -  The Union Ministry of Railways

    The Union Ministry of Railways has released Rail MADAD- Mobile Application for Desired Assistance During Travel Application to accelerate and modernize passenger complaint redressal. The app was released in-line with Union Government’s Digital India Initiative.

    • The application for the 1st time entirely digitized the Complaint management system.
    • It assimilates Railway Passenger Grievance Redressal and Management System established by Northern Railway’s Delhi Division.
    • It records complaint of passengers with least inputs. It also has option of photograph and release unique ID rapidly. It transmits online complaints to relevant authority/officials for instant action.
    • The action taken on complaint is also passed to the passenger via SMS.
    • It also shows various helpline numbers including Security, Child helpline and many more and also provides direct calling facility for instantaneous assistance in single easy step. It assimilates all modes of registering complaints including offline/online modes on single platform.
    • It represents holistic picture of deficient areas and permit focused corrective action by concerned administrators.
    • It also aids in data analysis to produce trends on various performance parameters of particular train and stations like cleanliness, facilities to make managerial process more accurate and effective.
      Met dept to use flash flood guidance  system for first time to forecast floods
    • The Indian Meteorological Department will be enable to publish forecast on floods and
      guidance on June 11 th , 2018, on the precautionary measures to the disaster management
      agencies with the support of a new soil study statistics known as Flash Flood Guidance
      System.
    • Indian Meteorological Department would release this service byJuly 2018.
    • The soil study completed from different soil types of various regions will also be convoyed
      by the rain forecast to determine how much water would be remained after absorption
      into the ground.
    • The state and district-level farmers’ bodies and disaster management firms will be given
      suitable guidance for flood readiness.
    • In plains like Rajasthan and MP, where the soil is much absorbent, 10-20 cm of rainfall
      will not result into floods.
    • In hilly areas like Uttarakhand, the soil is less absorbent and similar amount of rainfall is
      sufficient to cause floods.
    • Currently, theCentral Water Commission gives out flood warnings.

    Mauritius to host 11th World Hindi Conference between - 18th August to 20th August

    As part of the visit of the South African countries by the External Affairs MinisterSushma
    Swaraj, she took halt by Port Louis to examine the work on the 11th World Hindi
    Conference, which will be organised by Mauritius Government from August 18-20th 2018.

    World Day against Child Labour 2018 observed globally on - 12th June 2018

    The World Day against Child Labour was celebrated worldwide on June 12th , 2018 with an objective to spread awareness against child labour.

    Key Details

    • There are 541 million young workers worldwide. They account for above 15% of the world’s labour force and suffer approximately 40% higher rate of non-fatal occupational grievances.
    • More than 73 million children are in dangerous work and almost half of the 152 million children aged between 5-17 are still into child labour.
    • These children are working in mines, fields, factories and homes, carrying heavy loads and working long hours where many grieve lifelong physical and psychological consequences.
    • According to the International Labour Organisation’s Conventions, no child less than the age of 18 should perform dangerous work.

    Did you know?
    The International Labour Organisation declared the World Day against Child Labour in 2002 to emphasis attention on the worldwide level of child labour and the action and exertions desirable to eradicate it. Every year on 12th June, the Day carries together governments, workers administrations, and civil society to lime light the dilemma of child labourers and plans to support them.
