    Russia agrees on India's nuclear liability law

    On 10th June 2014,  Russia in-principle agreed on the Indian nuclear liability law. This agreement paved the way for signing of the contract for Unit 3 and 4 of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) in July 2014.

    Earlier in April 2014, India and Russia signed a General Framework Agreement on Unit 3 and 4 of KNPP after crossing the initial hurdle posed by the Civil Liability Nuclear Damage (CLND) Act 2010. Though the Agreement was to be signed in October 2013 during the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Moscow. However, it was not signed due to Russia raising certain objection over some clauses of the CLND Act, 2010.

    Vishal Sikka appointed as CEO of Infosys

    Important current affairs came out on 11th June 2014, as Vishal Sikka appointed as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Infosys. He will be taking charge on 1st August 2014. 

    He will succeed the current Chief Executive and Managing Director S.D. Shibulal. 

    Earlier, he worked as non-founder Chief Executive Officer of SAP AG and a former executive board member of SAP AG. Vishal Sikka is a doctorate in computer science from Stanford University.

    Company founders N.R. Narayana Murthy and S. Gopalakrishnan will step down as Executive Chairman and Executive Vice-Chairman on 14 June 2014. 

    However both the co-founders will continue on the board to ensure smooth transition till 10 October 2014 in non-executive roles. 

    Canara Bank opened branch in New York

    Canara Bank on 10 June 2014 opened its seventh overseas branch in New York, USA. Other six overseas branches are in London, Leicester (UK), Hong Kong, Shanghai, Bahrain and Johannesburg. Its representative office is at Sharjah and a Joint Venture is in Moscow. 

    Inauguration of the New York branch had now made banks presence in eight countries namely, UK, US, Hong Kong, China, Bahrain, South Africa, UAE and Russia.

    Three day Leh Festival began in Leh region of J&K

    On 12th June 2014, The three day Leh Festival began in Leh region of Jammu & Kashmir. It is also famous with the name of Ladakh Singhey Khabab Spring Festival. It is organized by the Tourism Department of Jammu and Kashmir.

    The main objective of the festival is to promote tourism in the region of Leh - Ladakh in the State of Jammu and Kashmir.  The festival is celebrated in the name of the Indus River to strengthen communal harmony in the country as the River Indus is known as a symbol of unity in diversity.

    The festival was launched in the year 2001 and is celebrated annually for three days in the month of June.

    World Day Against Child Labour observed on 12th June

    On 12th June 2014, World Day Against Child Labour was observed across the globe. The International Labour Organization (ILO) launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 to focus attention on the global extent of child labour and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it. Each year on 12 June, the World Day brings together governments, employers and workers organizations, civil society, as well as millions of people from around the world to highlight the plight of child labourers and what can be done to help them.

    World Day Against Child Labour calls for:

    • Action to introduce, improve and extend social protection, in line with the ILO Recommendation No. 202 on social protection floors.
    • National social security systems that are sensitive to children’s needs and help fighting child labour.
    • Social protection that reaches out to especially vulnerable groups of children.
