Where was mass stranding of whales done recently - New Zealand Beach

More than 400 whales got themselves stranded in the early morning hours of 10 February 2017 at Farewell spit in the South Island of New Zealand. Almost 300 of them died at beach only.

This has been taken as the worst whale stranding in decades.

    Important Highlights :

    • The Department of Conservation (DOC) immediately launched a rescue operation for the beached whales upon notification.
    • The staff along with a dozen volunteers tried to refloat the remaining 100 whalesat the sea early morning only.
    • The authorities also raised an urgent plea to the local people in that area to join the rescue mission with required essentials including towels, buckets and sheets to keep the beached whales cool, calm and, wet.
    • Shallow bay near the beach makes it difficult for them to swim out once they get too close. Results in whale stranding, but it is still not clear how so many whales managed to beach themselves together.
    • The latest stranding at Farwell Spit is the third largest whale stranding in New Zealand’s recorded history.
