UPSC CIVIL SERVICES MAINS EXAMINATION

ELIGIBILITY:

• For the IAS, IFS & IPS, the candidate must/should be a citizen of India.

• For the IRS and other services, a candidate must be one of the following:

1. A citizen of India
2. a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India

• A degree from a Central, State or Deemed university
• A degree through correspondence
• A degree from a open university or a college

AGE CRITERIA:

A candidate must be between the age of 21 and 31 years on the year of examination. For OBC, the upper age limit is 35, for SC 37 and for ST the limit is 37 years.

TOTAL NUMBER OF ATTEMMPTS FOR THIS EXAM

• There are 4 number of attempts for general students
• For OBC category candidates there are 7 attempts
• But for ST/ SC there are unlimited number of attempts

PATTERN OF UPSC CIVIL SERVICES EXAMINATION

• Every year the UPSC change the pattern of the Civil Service examination.
• There are now a total of 9 question papers to be answered. All 9 papers are descriptive type. There are two qualifying papers mentioned as follows: modern Indian language which will be worth of 300 marks, and English that will also be of 300 marks. The marks of these two papers will not be counted during the making of merit list of this examination.
• Following the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution candidates can pick any of the two languages i.e. Hindi or English as the medium for writing the answers in the Mains examination.
• According to the latest pattern of this exam, there are 4 papers of 400 marks of general studies which are made compulsory be the UPSC. The level of syllabus that comes in the exam in general studies section is of degree level.
• There is only 1 optional subject to choose from the list of subjects. There are two papers worth of 300 marks each. Therefore, the optional paper is of 600 marks. Aspirants are allowed to take literature as one of their optional subjects without the condition of having the same at graduation level. The level of optional paper is tougher than graduation degree level but it is very easier than master’s degree.
• The interview includes itself in the exam and is of 250 marks. Candidates have the right to choose the language in which they would like the interview to go on. There are translators in case of any problem
• All of this comprises if 1750 marks.

PREPARATION FOR UPSC CIVIL SERVICES EXAMINATION

• To do well in the civil services examination one needs to be sure of oneself about his/her own abilities as you can give your hundred percent only by desiring themselves to do well
