Boats and Streams Formulas and Facts
1. Boat going Downstream:
If boat is going in the direction of water flow then it is called boat going downstream.
2. Boat going Upstream:
If boat is going opposite to the direction of water flow then it is called boat going upstream.
3. Speed Downstream: If the speed of a boat in still water is u km/hr and the speed of the stream is v km/hr, then:
Speed downstream = (u + v) km/hr.
Means the speed of stream and of boat will be added.
4. Speed Upstream: If the speed of a boat in still water is u km/hr and the speed of the stream is v km/hr, then:
Speed upstream = (u - v) km/hr.
5. If the speed downstream of boat is a km/hr and the speed upstream of boat is b km/hr, then
\begin{aligned}
\text{Speed in still water =}\frac{1}{2}(a+b) km/hr \\
\text{Speed of stream =}\frac{1}{2}(a-b)km/hr \\
\end{aligned}
