Question Detail
A train is running with a speed of 60 kmph and its length is 110 metres. Calculate the time by which it will pass a man running opposite with speed of 6 kmph.
- 2 second
- 4 second
- 6 second
- 8 second
Answer: Option C
Explanation:
From the given question,
we will first calculate the speed of train relative to man,
=> ( 60 + 6 ) = 66 km/hr ( we added 6 because man is running opposite )
Convert it in metre/second
\begin{aligned}
= 66 \times\frac{5}{18} \\
= \frac{55}{3} m/sec\\
\text{Time it will take to pass man }\\
= 110 \times \frac{3}{55} \\
= 6 \text{ seconds}
\end{aligned}
1. A train is 360 meter long is running at a speed of 45 km/hour. In what time will it pass a bridge of 140 meter length.
- 20 seconds
- 30 seconds
- 40 seconds
- 50 seconds
Answer: Option C
Explanation:
Speed = 45 Km/hr = 45*(5/18) m/sec
= 25/2 m/sec
Total distance = 360+140 = 500 meter
Time = Distance/speed
\begin{aligned}
= 500*\frac{2}{25} = 40 seconds
\end{aligned}
2. Two trains running in opposite directions cross a man standing on the platform in 27 seconds and 17 seconds respectively and they cross each other in 23 seconds. The ratio of their speeds is ?
- 1:3
- 3:2
- 3:5
- 3:7
Answer: Option B
Explanation:
Let the speeds of the two trains be x m/sec and y m/sec respectively.
Then, length of the first train = 27x metres,
Length of the second train = 17y metres.
[because distance = speed*time]
\begin{aligned}
\frac{27x+17y}{x+y} = 23 \\
=> 27x + 17y = 23x + 23y \\
=> 4x = 6y \\
=> \frac{x}{y} = \frac{6}{4}
\end{aligned}
So ratio of the speeds of train is 3:2
3. Two trains 140 m and 160 m long run at the speed of 60 km/hr and 40 km/hr respectively in opposite directions on parallel tracks. The time which they take to cross each other, is
- 9.8 seconds
- 10.8 seconds
- 11.8 seconds
- 12.8 seconds
Answer: Option B
Explanation:
Relative Speed = 60+40 = 100 kmph
= 100*(5/18) = 250/9 m/sec
Distance = 140+160 = 300 meters
Time = Distance/Speed
\begin{aligned}
300*\frac{9}{250} = \frac{54}{5} \\
= 10.8 \text{ seconds}
\end{aligned}
So the time trains will take to cross each other will be 10.8 seconds
4. A train running at the speed of 60 km/hr crosses a pole in 9 seconds. Find the length of the train.
- 150 meter
- 145 meter
- 140 meter
- 135 meter
Answer: Option A
Explanation:
Speed = 60*(5/18) m/sec = 50/3 m/sec
Length of Train(Distance) = Speed * Time
\begin{aligned}
= \frac{50}{3}*9 = 150 meter
\end{aligned}
5. A train, 800 meter long is running with a speed of 78 km/hr. It crosses a tunnel in 1 minute. What is the length of the tunnel ?
- 650 meter
- 555 meter
- 500 meter
- 458 meter
Answer: Option C
Explanation:
Let length of tunnel is x meter
Distance = 800+x meter
Time = 1 minute = 60 seconds
Speed = 78 km/hr = 78*5/18 m/s = 65/3 m/s
Distance = Speed*Time
\begin{aligned}
=> 800+x = \frac{65}{3}*60 \\
=> 800+x = 20*65 = 1300 \\
=> x = 1300 - 800 = 500 \\
\end{aligned}
So the length of the tunnel is 500 meters.
[If you want to calculate it practically, then please have your copy and pen and take a ride of Kalka to Shimla toy train in north India. It has many tunnels on the way :) ]
